Concern about Vitamins

I have been taking my vitamins religiously for 8 years, but this year something is going on. I hurt my shoulder in the spring and it is still sore, it has not healed properly, I have now hurt my hip and it is causing a lot of discomfort.

My labs are good except Vitamin D, so am I malabsorbing some vitamin I need and haven't got checked or could it be my diet?

Any ideas would be helpful. I went to the dr. and he didn't give me anything for the discomfort,

but if it surgery related I want to get a jump on it right away.

I don't know about the hip but I have what they are calling frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis. They see it a lot in the over 40 crowd. The orthopedic doc says he sees it folks that have diabetes but he didn't differentiate between type I or II and I haven't been able to pin him down on that. I suspect he doesn't really know, which is what the physical therapist said. So, the treatment has been a an MRI followed by a steroid shot in the shoulder and physical therapy w/at home exercises.

Adhesive Capsulitis happens with all types of diabetics, Type 1, 1.5 2, etc. at a much greater rate than with the general population. General population runs about 3-5%. With diabetics, it's closer to 20%. So having diabetes is not the ONLY way to get it, just far more common.

I had bilateral adhesive capsulitis...it was miserable but with shots and therapy, it did get much better. It takes time.

Best exercise for me was to 'run" a washcloth up and down the side of the shower about 10 times each side...stretching up as far as possible. Do it while in a warm shower as the water helps in two ways...it warms up the joint and makes the washcloth slide easier.

There are others you can do at home as well...

When was your last bone scan?    I don't have much experience with osteo disorders, but a low vitamin D could contribute to lower calcium absorption..  Could any of your issues be attributable to your bones?  I don't have an answer, its just a thought.

Hi all,

I have never had diabetes, so that is out and it seems to me to be more muscle then bone but not sure, I have never had a bone scan, I am going to make a Dr appt today and see if he can help with this, I wish we had a Dr, here in Saskatchewan Canada that understood this surgery. We have 3-4 surgeons that do the RNY in another city but I don't know what kind of Dr support they get after the surgery. I may make some phone  calls and look for some information.

Thanks

Susan

Susan, one does not HAVE to be diabetic to have adhesive capsulities...it happens in the normal population about 3-5%. It's just that diabetics are MUCH more likely to have it.

As far as which doctor...doesn't have to be your surgeon. Actually my primary doctor diagnosed mine. My endo confirmed it. If you must use a specialist, go with a joint specialist (orthopedics).

Could it. Simply be arthritis in the joint? I had bone spurs removed from. My shoulder 2 years ago and there was arthritis present. He cleaned out the arthritis but said it would come back and it has.
Could this be it? A bone scan or a MRI would pick up the arthritis if that is it.

My osteomalaca (adult rickets cause by major Vit D deficiency) started in my hips/back. Now I have it back in control the pain has gone. My doctor dismissed it as an issue requiring physio!

What D are you taking and how much?
