Opinions please...I am needing to make a decision.

Hello,

I am diabetic and I am not on NSAIDS (from what I can tell).  I am thinking that DS is the direction that I would be leaning to at this point.  Throughout this whole process, we have heard plenty about the sleeve and bypass surgeries.  I did not ever hear about DS - so I wanted to post this message and open it up for people to comment and assist.

I am being seen at St Joe's in Hamilton and Dr. Hong is the surgeon.  He had said that it in two stages or in one.  He preforms it laparscopically either way.  If broken up, step one is a sleeve and the rest is done later.  I have gotten to the point where I know I don't want a sleeve and if I go with DS, I want it (ideally) done in one sugery.

Thanks for taking the time to assist me.

:)

The DS is your best shot at resolving your diabetes. There's more information on DSFACTS (sorry I'm on a phone so can't provide the actual link).

If you ever take Motrin, ibuprofen,Advil, etc, then you are on NSAIDS. Ppl are living longer now,and the likelihood for developing arthritis increases the longer one lives. NSAIDS are the first line pain regimen for arthritis. Also, you say you know you don't want a sleeve. I assume you mean a stand alone sleeve? You are aware that the stomach of the DS is a larger sleeve, right?

Thanks HollyKim,

I did mean that sleeve as a stand alone.  I didn't realize that the stomach is larger than the sleeve.  I'm knee deep into some searching and reading various articles now, so that is helping for sure.

My surgery is Nov 12th......I have been researching for a long time...many sights along with talking to several doctors and friends and family.... heard so many stories of people putting all the weight back on within a few years after surgery.  For me I chose the DS because I wanted the BEST chance at being successful... we all have failed to keep the weight off time and time again... for me it was the DS or nothing... I was not going to go through all this only to wind up in the same boat a few years down the line...

BUT if you sign on for the DS you have to sign on to take your vitamins and get your blood work for life... for me that was a small price to pay to KEEP the weight off...and get on with my life HEALTHY!

My Doctor at first wanted to do my DS in two stages. I wasn't happy about two surgeries so he set a goal weight and if I hit the goal weight he would do it all at once. His justifications involved safety reasons. I don't know if that was skill level or just a statistical issue with the outcomes. I hit the goal and got it all done lap. I am very happy with the results.

I see you have diabetes. The DS has the best percentages for eliminating diabetes but you should understand none of the operations is a guarantee. I was lucky and walked out of the hospital without needing my insulin or metformin anymore.

Now that you know about it do your research and come back with any questions.

Whatever you choose- Good Luck.
