Cut out caffeine too as that can also problems with your bones.

I've heard this, too. I was a severe Diet Coke addict (40-60 ounces per day) but I quit cold turkey over 3 months ago. :)

Glad you knew about this one.  I have borderline osteopenia on L1 & L2 (I didn't get to see any numbers).  I've never been much into caffeine, but I blame deprprovera injections - the nurse administering the said 'no these don't cause osteoporosis' when I asked her about them a few years back.

You may want to consider strontium if things don't improve.  Strontium helps aid bone growth.  It has however been linked to cardiovascular issues, so I went off it until I got a low calcium reading in my most recent results.

And be careful with antacids too - they inhibit calcium absorption. I only ever had antacids for a few weeks when I was first sleeved and I've not taken them since then.

I've been taken Pantoprazole since surgery -- does that inhibit calcium absorption? I haven't tried not taking it, so maybe I don't really need it anymore.

Check the info that comes with it, but IIRC all antacids inhibit calcium absorption which is why I stopped as soon as the surgeon allowed me to. It wasn't making any difference to me anyway - if you do need antacids, then you'll have to weigh up your options.

Some really great information here! But I have a question.....will having osteopenia keep someone from having a DS??

I'm hoping someone can help me understand my doctor's voicemail to me about my DEXA scan results. I will talk to him about it, of course, but I know you guys are the experts when it comes to DS and calcium supplementation.

I had my first ever scan done last week. I'm only 10 weeks out from surgery, so I'm pretty sure that my results are not due to my surgery yet, correct? (My nutrition pre-op was HORRIBLE! Mostly fast food, hardly any calcium, and I never ate vegetables. Still don't. :P)

My doctor said that in the L2 (?) spine, my score is a (-1.6) and in the right femur, my score is a (-1.1). He said that anything below (-1) is considered osteopenia and my scores are only borderline osteopenia.

He said to make sure I'm taking calcium and vitamin D.

Right now, I've been taking about 2,450 mg of calcium citrate (2,000 from BA chews and the rest from my multivitamins). I'm also taking 100,000 IU of dry Vitamin D3-50. (I was supposed to go back down to 50,000 IU after three months, which is coming up soon).

Questions:

1) Should I increase my calcium based on my dexa scan results?
2) Should I keep taking the 100,000 IU of Vitamin D3? Or follow my surgeon's advice and go back down to 50,000 IU after the three months are up?
3) How often do I need to do DEXA scans?
4) Finally, should I be worried about the osteopenia???

TIA!!

both my parents have osteoporosis, yes both mother and father, they were both treated with fosamax for the maximum amount.  Every single one of my bone markers are abnormal...yes every one...I have a DEXA every 12 months.  if your vit d is not around 75 or lower and you cant keep it there,  look into injections and have your blookwork checked for metabolic bone disease...which is something I have, as I said all my markers are abnormal, I know DSers don't check their bone markers but they really should.  besides your usual blood work , CA, Vit D, 25, PTH,  etc...have:  these will test for bone formation, and bone loss

  • BSAP (bone-specific Alkaline Phosphatase)
  • B-CTx (c-Telopeptide)
  • U-NTx (urine n-Telopeptide)
  • Osteocalcin

good luck to you

Please explain those four tests.  I have osteocalcin tested but have never heard of the other three.  I have had normal dexas but am OCD about my bone health.

One thing that has not been mentioned is that weight bearing exercise also is important for our bones.
