Anyone 5-10 years out regain weight?
I did have a ds, i checked with my surgeon and he said that our Intestines regrow villi, And we absorb more. He told me that I
Needed to go on a 1500 cal diet, I told him that if I could do that I wouldn't have had the surgery in the first place.
intestinal adaptation is a survival mechanism....the human body is an amazing thing
we traumatize our body by having the DS....the body adapts by becoming much better at absorbing nutrients, but the intestines never grow back, they do get better at absorbing though. The bypass is too large in a DS that we will never be able to absorb all the nutrients that we will need...so malabsorption means calories and nutrients....
so there are no absolutes in medicine, if we start eating too many carbs, guess what...weight gain, with or without the DS
the plan with DS is to eat mildly more and allow the bypass to prevent some degree of weight gain. If you are gaining weight it usually means you are eating more, especially easily absorbed things like crackers, as the sleeve doubles in capacity beyond one year out. Surgery doesn't make it easier, it just hopefully makes it a little fairer and allows you to start at a more reasonable level...
I hope you find an answer, wishing you well...
Hi,
I am 10 1/2 years post op and just a few weeks further out than you. I did not experience any significant regain until the last two years. Even now, my regain is around 20 lbs, so not significant when considering my total weight lost (135 from my highest weight), but significant for me. I am trying to get this right and get back on track. I have tried a number of things to get the scale moving downward and still struggle.
I don't believe it is just about low carb anymore. I think it is also about calories. And I believe I am absorbing more fat. I am awaiting my labs, but will be interested to see my cholesterol and protein levels. I have heard that not only do we grow more villi for absorption, but we can also actually re-grow intestine. Both would increase absorption of protein and fat.
Unfortunately, I believe it is about dieting at this stage. There was someone on here a few years ago who was 10 years post op at the time. She was able to successfully turn it around and we can, too. If I recall correctly, she tried to keep carbs low and watched what she ate. And she exercised.
I am undergoing a bunch of tests for another issue at this time, but have started increasing my exercise again and am trying to manage the stress better. Last time I was under the kind of stress I have been under the last 2 years, I was pre-op and gained 100 lbs. Regaining 20 lbs is not so bad, in comparison, but I am coming to the conclusion that the only way I am going to lose, and not maintain where I am, is to decrease calories and increase exercise.

excuse my silliness, i know about growing more villi for better absorption down the road and further out of surgery but to grow more intestines? how is that possible? my doctor told me that that is not at all possible and i have been searching the net to find any information to prove that we can grow more intestines but so far nothing has come up. do you have any facts or information that you could share with me regarding the re-growing of intestines? i sure would appreciate it to no end if you could help.
Regards

It's called intestinal adaptation. Here are professional references and articles.

I live in the Bay Area and when I was looking into bariatric surgery I saw Dr Feng's name. He never performed the DS and still doesn't as far as I know. I would agree that having another DS doctor review the surgical notes would be a good step. Maybe you have the sleeve or gastric bypass. Do you know what length your common channel is?
I agree with Lady Tazz. I am experiencing regain and I am not 10 years out from DS. DS was a revision for me . I struggle every day to take off the weight I have regained. I can eat very little in a day and not see the scales go down. The DS is a powerful tool, but I believe we start taking that tool for granted which can have a tendency to sneak up on us over time.
I agree with the others who have recommended contacting Dr. Keshishian. He was my revision surgeon and he was fantastic both before I went in for the surgery and after.
Good Luck to you. I know the aggravation and pain of going through regain, especially after a WLS and all the feelings associated with it.
