I had  Ds  3/23/03, got down to 165, from 280. I am a very picky eater, so has been difficult for me. I have regained a lot of weight.

I  now weigh 256, help

Back to basic low carbing. I've seen folks take off the regain as far out as you are. Good luck!

I'm curious as to your surgery.  Have you seen the surgical report?  Are you sure you have the DS?  I only ask because I have heard (no personal experience), that some think they had the DS but find out they had something else when they looked at their report.

I certainly mean no disrespect.  I have heard of  some bounce back weight, but I havent seen anyone post who is so close back to their pre-surgical weight.

Like MajorMom said, get back on track with a high protein, low carb diet.  Make sure you have your labs up-to-date and ensure the rest of your body is healthy.  If you haven't been eating well, you might have some deficiencies that are more important than the extra weight you are carrying.

I've been holding my breath and will continue but I've seen pics of a lot of people here that amazed the heck out of me  . . . they were the most successful and "big" again but probably not as big as when they started out.  I was to say the least "shocked" that DSers gained the way they have.  It got me thinking that I would speak to my doc because I was curious.

All best,

Try posting on MajorMom's daily bites n vites thread and hopefully that'll get you more focused.  It often forces me to have an extra shake - I'm sure my protein figures would be way lower if I didn't post them every day.

It might also give you some ideas of different stuff to eat.

You lost 115 lbs with this surgery, then put most of it back on.

I think I've seen only one other person who had a DS and had a major regain.  I would second the poster who said review your surgery notes with your doctor.  I know this must sound strange, but after surgery we absorb around 50% of all calories.  Even less if you eat a lot of fat.  50 lbs regain I could see - if you ate with total abandon and really heavy on the sugar every day.

What is your common channel length?

I was one *****gained 100 lbs after a DS.  I did it through eating pretty much nothing but junk and that plus a very large sleeve (this was 2002 when they did things differently) allowed me to eat a lot of calories.  I remember thinking the same thing, that I didn't absorb about 50% of the calories I ate but it really didn't matter because if you eat 4000 or more calories a day you will gain weight no matter what surgery you had.  I was a normal size for the first 5  years and after year 5 it started piling on.  Plus I was ignorant to the fact that all those refined carbs were causing me to have horrible bathroom issues and made my chronic intestinal bacterial overgrowth much worse.  I had a revision to reduce my malabsorption and my surgeon revised my sleeve to a pouch and with restriction for the first time I lost all the excess weight and then some.

Even though in the end I was only down 20 lbs after 8 years I know that at the rate I had been gaining before my first surgery I would have undoubtedly been at least 300 lbs after 8 years with no WLS.

Anyone who thinks they can't have major regain after a DS could be in for a rude surprise, especially down the road.  I was one who thought I would never be obese again and I could eat unrestrained because my DS would keep me from gaining a lot of weight.  There is a lot more regain after DS then you hear about because many people who have regained don't come around and talk about it because there seems to be a blame the patient mentality.  Some people don't want to accept that any WLS can be out eaten so they blame the person or the doctor for the regain.  The truth is, the DS didn't fail.  Used properly it will work well but not everyone uses it the way it is supposed to be used.

I am sure there is regain, as everyone adapts down the road.  I noticed that as I age, and adapt, and get thinner (requiring less calories to keep breathing) that it all starts to work against me.  I do see that I will be on a strict diet in 2 years to maintain.

It shouldn't be too strict.  That is the beauty of malabsorption.  You can eat a lot more of things like meat and cheese, which should help you not be hungry or feel deprived.  It's just the simple carbs that you have to be strict about.  My problem is I love things like bread and treats.  There is currently no WLS that can address that but believe me, if they ever figure out a wayy to cause us to malabsorpb  those carbs I'll be the first in line.

I did have a ds, i checked with my surgeon and he said that our   Intestines regrow villi,  And we absorb more. He told me that I

Needed to go on a 1500 cal diet,  I  told him  that if I  could  do that I wouldn't have had the surgery in the first place.
