I take prescription Chromagen Forte (Multigen Plus - Generic).  My PCP put me on this about 9 years ago when my iron started to drop.  He said it is easier absorbable.    It has been in the normal range since.

I'm hoping that the hematologist will have more options to prescribe as my PCP already has me the only thing that she tells me is available.

My ferritin got down to 4 too.  I never realized how bad I felt until  I started  my fourth out of five infusions.  For me, low iron manifested itself mostly in my critical thinking.  I didnt have sharp thoughts.  I would be at work trying to discuss something and I had a hard time seeing details.  That is now my clue that my iron is off.

i never got the low energy, I need to nap, type feeling.  A nap is a rarity for me.  There is always something to do.

Make sure you bring a drawing (I have a card) of your DS.  Most hematologists these days are used to seeing WLS patients with low iron.  Iron is mostly absorbed in the duodendum, and because ours is shorter (and so is the RNYers-but I am no expert here), the malabsorption of iron is common.

Beware of the medical student on rotation who doesnt know squat!

I had iron absorption tests of the tender iron sold by Vitalady and the Proferrin sold by Vitaladay.  I absorbed neither.  At that point, I was cleared for infusions and will rely on those, probably forever.

if you still have your period, know that this will effect how quickly your iron stores decline.  My levels tanked in six months, but I was having heavy periods.  I had a uterine ablation after my last infusion.  Its a waiting game to see how much of an improvement it will have on my iron levels.

Thanks, I'll take a diagram. I've not had a period for about a decade so am surprised my levels are dropping despite that, as I read somewhere that your body is meant to retain the iron it, but obviously that's not the case.

One more thing.....

Do a search of "DS and Vitamin D" and "DS and iron" on this site and review the historical comments about these topics.  There are lots out there.

I'm taking Vitalady's tender Iron 175mg and my ferritin is at 150.  I don't get side affects from this dosage either.

You're lucky as I get cramps if I have more than a couple. It's probably related to me having IBS beforehand.
