Some of Dr Sudan's patients are in a DS Facebook group I belong to. If you're interested in that group let me know.

Hey Nancy,

How did your DS surgery go and how are you feeling? I may be having surgery in November and would love to get some input on length of surgery, recovery time, complications and how you are feeling now. Any input would be appreciated. Also , wouldn't mind hearing why you chose him over the other doc in NC and in the US. Thanks!

I agree with all the other comments about Dr. Sudan.  He is very quiet, but will ask often if you have any questions for him.  I really like him and had complete confidence in him.  The reason I chose him is because he was the closest to me.  I work at Duke, so am local.  I never thought about looking for someone else.  My surgery lasted about 4 hours, I believe.  They had me up walking that evening.  I had no pain from the surgery, but the gas was very, very uncomfortable.  Dr. Sudan wants us to pass gas before we can have any liquids.  I was given ice chips, and my mouth was really dry.   I was told not to swallow much of tha****er.  The next day they removed the catheter, and each day I was disconnected from other monitors.  Surgery was Tuesday, I went home Friday.  I walked as much as I could, but it was Thursday before I really felt like my insides were moving and I released gas.  The tray of liquids looked better than a steak dinner to me!  I had no pain at home, no discomfort.  I was on the liquid diet for 2 weeks, and was glad to be put on soft foods then.  I went back to work after being out a total of 3 weeks, and although I was a bit tired, I was ok.  I have not had any complications.  I went off the soft foods and on to a more regular diet after about 10 weeks.  I still do not have a huge appetite and have to force myself to eat all I'm supposed to be eating.  I do use protein shakes still, but only once a day.  I am scheduled to see him again in a couple weeks for the 3 month follow up where I guess I'll get labs done.  I did find the first two months most difficult, and I believe I was still healing and my emotions were not where they normally are.  I did not go thru depression, but did get tired of the limited variety of food I could have.  I now feel completely myself, especially now that people are noticing that I'm shrinking.  I'm losing an average of 2 lb a week, but that is different for everyone so don't use that as an average.  It's just what my body is doing.  I am still learning my vitamin regime.  I don't think you'd be sorry for going with Dr. Sudan.  The people in his office are very nice and supportive as well.  Keep me posted, ok and if you have any questions please ask!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. It sounds like things are going well so far. I think the thing that worries me the most about getting the DS is making sure I get in enough protein and all my vits and fluid.   I know DS is the surgery that will give me the best results but I'm still feeling anxious about it and the unknown.  Why did you choose the DS over the sleeve or another surgery and did Dr. sudan recommend the surgery or did you bring it up to him?
