suppliments and other pre-surgery advice?

I am scheduled for my DS in February, possibly sooner if I can come up with the money sooner, as I'm self pay. I would like to start on my supplements before surgery so that I go in as healthy as possible. I saw an ad for Unjury which makes medical quality protein drink products and supplements specifically for gastric surgery patients. Is this a good brand or should I look into another? Any suggestions anyone has for supplementation or anything else I should do in preparation for surgery are much appreciated!
thanks!
Alicia
Hi Mouse,
Unjury is suppose to be a good protein and many use it. I had a difficult time stomaching the taste. I have tried MANY different brands and the one I finally settled on is Champion Pure Stack Whey, Chocolate. It mixes very well with no after taste and doesn't get thick like some do. Keep in mind that what you like pre surgery may change post surgery. At least it did for me.
Also, I would recommend increasing your activity like walking and such if you are able, so that you are physically in as good of shape as possible. It may help making the recovery a bit easier. Increasing water intake is a good thing as well. Unless your vitamin levels are depleted pre surgery, I wouldn't think the increase in supplementation that is required post surgery would be necessary as it is the malabsorbption that drives the necessity of higher levels of supplementation.
Good Luck on our upcoming surgery!

I probably should've mentioned that I have been doing elliptical and weight training for an hour, three days a week. I intend to bump that up as my stamina increases. I do hope that will help recovery from surgery. I'm glad you mentioned about taste changing after surgery. I was planning on stocking up before surgery, but I would hate to be stuck with something that I found disgusting after!
I think planning ahead is great - and especially getting up to speed with the dietary requirements you will need to live by.
One thing I will caution you about is not to buy too much of the products in advance. I found that my tastes really changed post-op. don't know why!! But they did. Many things I ate and liked before surgery either didn't sit well in my new tummy or I just didn't like the taste anymore.
I really like the Bariatric Advantage vitamins - the chewables really saved me because it was several months before I could swallow vitamins - again, not everyone is the same, this was my experience.
I also like the Premier Protein drinks which can be purchased at Costco. Home blended drinks were so full of bubbles that I got full before I could get them down. These packaged drinks have 30g of protein and are easy to get down in one sitting. I have one every morning.
I have lost 130 lbs in the year since my surgery. It isn't easy but it is do-able and worth all the hard work. Best of luck!!

130 lbs in one year is awesome! Congrats! I have just under 200 to lose. I hope I can do that well! I think I'm going to buy a month's supply of vitamins just so I have something to be taking while I figure out what I like then I'll buy that. Thanks for the tip about Costco protein drinks! I hadn't even considered costco! I'll check them out!
