Gaining weight after gall bladder removal!!! help
I am kind of nervous because I have gained 13 lbs since needing my gall bladder out.
I had DS in 2010 and went from 295 to 147. I gained a little weight and went up to 153-155 but maintained that weight for two years almost.
Then this June my gall bladder got infected and had to be removed. While in the hospital, I lost 8 lbs because I was there for 5 days and barely ate. I was 147 when released.
I gained back that lost which I would expect but now I am up to 160 and I have NOT been that weight.
Anyways, I know it doesn't seem like a lot of weight because it isn't but because I maintained and now I am higher, I am worried.
I read online that the gall bladder stores and regulates bile and without that, your body may produce too little or too much bile and thus not digest fats as well. I assume I am eating too much fat if I am gaining weight since the liver is not producing enough bile for me to digest it?
Should I be taking bile supplements when I eat to help? I am not sure how this effects DSer's?

You don't need to take anything to help digest fat, you would just gain even more.
The weight you gained could very easily be just some of your "bounce back" weight that most of us go through.
Or you are eating to many carbs, not enough protein, not drinking enough or one of many reasons.
The removal of your gall bladder has really nothing to do with your weight loss or gain, it is a storage place for your bile, you still produce bile regardless of if you have the gall bladder or not.

Thanks for your response.
I read online that although we still produce bile, now that the GB is gone it is not regulated. But, maybe that does not affect DSers... that was for the non wls people.
I have been maintaining for almost 2 years. Isn't that bounce back weight sooner after you lose the majority of the weight? Or maybe mine was delayed.
Or it could be that I am eating too many carbs. I can really pack it away and until now, I have not had to watch it at all. I lost and maintained for a long time. Maybe I just need to get back to basics and start eating more protein and less carbs. I didn't have to watch carbs before. I get about 90g of protein on a good day but sometimes 70. So, yeah, not good. Thanks.. that helps me get back on track.
I can't see that removing the gall bladder would cause weight gain given that so many of us have it removed at the time of surgery (me included). Maybe you're still swollen from the fluids they pushed in from the drip.
I hope this is just temporary and your weight will settle soon.

I had open gb removal. There is fluid build up in there still. It's just weird because I lost 8 lbs because they were not letting me eat in the hospital until like the 4th day. So, I gained back that 8 plus an additional 5. And I know 5 is not a lot but for me, it kinda freaks me out because I don't want that 5 to turn into 10 and then 15 and more... you know?
I think I just have been eating so much for the last 2 years and not gaining and now I am starting to. Maybe because I am 3 years out, maybe I am absorbing more. I have been maintaining for so long and no****ching what I eat. I have to star****ching.
Yep I know what you mean about absorbing more and not wanting 5 to turn into 15, etc.
