Dr. ordered calorie increase...suggestions, please?

I've been ordered to increase my caloric intake from 3,000 to 5,000 calories daily, thanks to a surprise *massive* loss of 20 pounds in two weeks, no identifiable reason.  I'm thinking it might have been a carb combo that awakened the DS giant.  My weight has been stable for two years until now.  The initial discovery of the weight loss actually scared me!

I still do protein shakes and calorie dense foods...but  I'd like some suggestions of other favorite foods of yours.

I'm only 8 pounds away from the absolute lowest weight my PCP set for me.

Protein and other levels are OK...we just can't figure out why my weight dropped so suddenly!

I have been quite stressed lately, and I'm sure that's a factor.

Don't be too concerned about this unless it continues.  If your siggy is right, you still weigh almost 170.  Water/fluid retention can be a 10lb difference in a normie.  Even more when someone has noticeable edema.  It was probably a combo of things.  For the second weigh in you were retaining less fluids and were completely 'cleaned out'.  Start weighing every day and figure out your pattern.  Watch it but don't stress out about it.  What's your BMI?  I don't think it's anywhere close to underweight unless you are quite tall.

Listen to your body.  Are you feeling OK?  I know you have some other issues as well but OK for you?

If you really want to make sure you don't lose anymore...the key is carbs.  Eat more of anything with sugar.  Even fruit.  Make your protein shakes with bananas and throw in a couple dates and a scoop or two of ice cream.

When I am eating a lot of fat, it seems the food is going through me faster and I seem to absorb less calories.  Not to mention fat fills me up faster that other foods, but I absorb only 20% of it calorie wise.  So I would cut back on the fat in your diet.

They say simple carbs are absorbed 100%.  If your system can handle simple carbs, start adding honey and real sugar to your hot drinks.  I hate to say this, but the more carbs and simple carbs you eat, the more your system gets used to it.  Now, I can eat dark chocolate, flan with real sugar in it, etc. and it gives me a little gas and that's it.

Eat more hard cheese.  Cheese is high in calories and carbs (being dairy).

If you eat low carb for the most part, then cut back on all the protein (after you have met your daily number) and fill up with brown rice or potatoes, peas, corn, and high sugar fruit.

Those are all the ideas that come to mind.  Hope something in there helps.  And hope your stress level drops for you soon.

Like I say, I wish I had your DS...  I'm down to 1,000 calories a day and still 20 lbs from goal.

Creon would stop you losing but I wouldn't worry until you're in the healthy range and approaching underweight. As you're 4 years out this shouldn't be a major concern yet IMO.

Wow Jazzy!

You have an extremely powerful DS!!!  No wonder why you could not comprehend why people don't lose and even gain with the DS.  1500 calories and I am gaining (VSG only)!!!  WTH!  But I wouldn't want it any other way.  I have - and I don't like to claim "auto-immune" diseases - yep, plural.  So while I believe the DS is great I would never throw anything in the mix that could possibly make me more nutritionally unsound.  For example, all my adult life I have struggled with iron and now I understand that it is typical in others with RA.  So I am always trying to figure out and balance things in my body as is.

I do wish I had 5,000 calories to spend though.  Lets see enlightened ,  I would go to Popeyes.  I never go there because well hey it is not a wise choice when you absorb all the grease but if I had a DS, I'd do!  I love cheese and I am serious, I love cheese so I'd get busy on that.  Full fat unsweetened greek (now I only eat up to 1%, no more),  I don't know what else, but I would just keep it as healthy for the DS as possible.  Like you don't want to get into carbs feel lousy and hooked in.

Feel better hun.  No worries - that is where you begin.  Stress tears everything down.  Nothing good comes from it.

All Best,

L

i saw 3,000 calories and i said holy cow, then 5,000?  ha?  i think i would get sick of eating....seriously,??  I take in about 1800 cals/day, but my first wls was >10 years ago, and I have had 4 wls due to LB crap.  I guess what is your dr's lowest weight? is this a normal bmi, i have never heard of a dr that was not ok with that.

for example if you are 5' 10" you could weight 129 and be normal bmi....i don't think 20 lbs in 2 weeks is a DS issue, unless you have a problem, then food will not fix it...
