Hi. I am posting again cause I know you guys have all the answers lol.  Can I ask my dr. For a specific size sleeve and something else to get the best bang for my buck. I am paying and want the best.  I know I am metabolically challenged and need some help.  I was the one who had the sleeve and only lost 20 lbs so I am getting a DS and a revision.  Any suggestions?

i would discuss the common channel with your doctor. I wish I knew more about the common channel when I had my revision. My surgeon went with a 150 common channel. You can still lose weight with this common channel; however I feel its a little slower than others. The plus side of a 150 common channel is to do with future malnourishment. If I had to do it all over again I would have went with 125 common channel. My sleeve is a little bigger compared to a virgin DS. Due to two failed lapbands which caused scar tissue to my stomach. I hope this helps.

My surgeon made my sleeve a little bigger than normal and compensated with a shorter common channel. (He did this for me because I had horrible acid reflux pre-op).

Even though my sleeve is "bigger" than normal, I still get really full after a suprisingly small meal. And I haven't had acid reflux at all since surgery! :)

I have a common channel of 125, am a revision and lose an average of 12lbs a month. I'm not a fast loser nor am I really slow- just average which is ok with me and my malapsorption isn't too bad. At 6 months my labs are a tiny bit low in a couple of areas but I just need to work a little harder at getting them up. I am very happy with where things are for now.

Certainly you can ask! If you're going to Mexico, I strongly urge you to research your surgeon VERY CAREFULLY. There is really only ONE vetted DS surgeon in Mexico, and that's Dr. Ungson.

Angela,

Great to meet you! I am glad you are asking lots of questions here as you WILL FIND the answers you need. I just wanted to chime in and share MY EXPERIENCE and path with you. I am now 54 years old, almost 3 years out from my DS that was in Dec 2010 with Dr. K. I was a revision x 2, the DS being surgery #3. Being that i was overweigh most of my life always struggling, a revision and more mature in age, I really wanted a shorter CC in hopes that my weight would just FALL OFF! Lol....

Well, I did get a short CC of 50 and a 4oz sleeve. The first 2 years I only lost 73 lbs and was so devastated as i had 40-50 more lbs to lose to get to MY GOAL WEIGHT....  It was so frustrating.. I will tell you that i did not eat EXACTLY the way I feel i should of eaten, meaning , i did not just eat protein. I ate basically what ever i wanted. So that being said, the DS worked in that i did not gain any weight during that time but i did not lose either.

It has not been until just the last 5 months that i started losing again finally when i started walking everyday for 30-60 minutes and watching my food intake closely again.

Some people are blessed in that they don't have to do this. YOu may be one of those people too! But for this woman, I have had to go back to basics of protein, veggies, fruit and exercise. and not over indulge in that either. Also exercise.... I now have lost an additional 22 lbs and am down 89 lbs since DS surgery weight and 132 from my top weight of 305 lbs.

So, what i am trying to say is that EVEN WITH A 50CC and 4 oz pouch/sleeve, my weight loss was slow and did not fall off. let me also say that with a shorter CC you risk more diuretic issues like severe diarrhea if you eat sugar, creamy things etc...

I still dont regret for a moment my surgery or the size of my CC, but all of it can come with risks, side effects and no guarantee of how much you will or will not lose with the size of your CC and sleeve. I know people with a CC of 150/175 and have lost way more than myself or others and did not even have to ever watch what they ate.....  So?

Good luck, its all going to be better than now for sure!
