RNY to DS
Revision from RNY to DS is extremely difficult, tedious surgery; I seriously doubt your surgeon is capable of doing it.
There are about 6 surgeons in the US who can do this safely and correctly and I've never heard of your surgeon, so I don't think he's one. Find out who your surgeon has revised and see how they're doing; dig deeply into how he plans to revise you; there's only one right way to do it and it is very, very difficult.
When I was revised, I had one of if not the best surgeon; Dr. Rabkin in San Francisco and it took him 8 1//2 hours to finish the first surgery and then two days later, another 4 1/2 hours of surgery to get it done right. Not everyone has this much difficulty, but you can't know until you're opened up if your case is going to be so difficult or less so. Make sure the surgeon you pick and pay can do what ever has to be done in case you're like me and full of scar tissue and adhesions.
Revisions surgeons need a completely different level of skill and patience than any other; be very very choosy about who you let cut you open and re-route and revise your insides.
But if it's done right; like mine was, you get a new life and it's a miracle!
My RNY was 10 years ago and was laparoscopic and I'm praying the revision can be done that way as well.
Congrats on your new life!!!
Be VERY careful. There are only a select few surgeons in the country that have the expertise to do a TRUE RNY to DS. Your Dr is not on the list. First thing you need to do is find out EXACTLY what he is going to do. How many true RNY to DS revisions has he done? To have a TRUE DS, he will need to reconnect your pouch to your remnent stomach and then form the vertical sleeve. You will get your pylorus back with a true revision. Then he will need to do the switch part. Be careful that he doesn't try to talk you into the ERNY. If he does that, he does not have the experience to do a true RNY to DS and you should go elsewhere.
The recovery was a little harder for me than my original RNY. However, my original RNY was lap and my revision to DS was open. The revision is a longer surgery. It was about 6 weeks til I felt normal. Diet is VERY different. Visit dsfacts.com to get lots of factual information about the DS. Once you are fully healed you will be focusing on a high protein, high fat, how carb diet.
