You may want to contact Dr. Marchesini in Curitiba, Brazil. He is a fantastic surgeon and will talk to you via e-mail or even over the phone. Tell him what you told us and see what he says.

The cost will probably be around what Ungson in Mexico charges.

In my opinion and many others, Dr. Marchesini is one of the best out there. He studied and practiced in the US for several years.

I'm pretty sure this is still his e-mail address   [email protected]

You can tell him Ingeborg Humes recommended him to you, I'm sure he remembers me, he remembers all his US/Canada patients.

Good Luck

Sorry to hear Dr. B won't do it.  Keep on and be persistent.  You will find someone.  I'll ask Dina if she knows why.

About the opathies...  Retinopathy and neuropathy are 2 reasons why H had this done.  He controlled his diabetes with an iron hand.  But even when he was able to keep his A1C at normal levels, the opathies kept getting worse.  He saw his future as blind in a wheelchair.  2 weeks postop, he got up and mentioned his vision was blurry.  We decided to wait and jus****ch it for a while.  Not long afterwards he figured it out.  He no longer needed his glasses to see.  His vision went back to 20/20.  A couple years postop his ophthalmologist said there was no more retinopathy.  All gone.  But it did turn out the nerve damage in his feet did not resolve completely.  It did improve somewhat but never disappeared.

Hi Patty,

Thanks for all your suggestions and support.  I received a very helpful email from Dr. Baltasar and he referred me to a surgeon that does that particular surgery he recommended for me in Montreal, I received an email from that doctor today as well.  Things might progress well yet.

I have had peripheral neuropathy for a long time- can't feel my feet and hands hardly at all anymore.  Also have autonomic neuropathy and gastroparesis along with neuropathy in my eyes and ears now.  I hope they will get better if I get this surgery, at least so that they improve.

I have had such a long haul with this that waiting awhile is not a huge issue as long as my health doesn't decline further.  I feel like I have hope now, something I didn't have much off a few days ago even.

Well as it turns out I am going to have the RNY Gastric Bypass in a week here in Edmonton (Jan 29/14).  It sounds like it is the best option for me given my situation.  Thank you for all your help- this site is great!  I will let you guys know how it goes after the surgery.
