Depends on the surgeon...ask for their statistics.

Duodenal Switch (Lap) 01-24-11 | Surgeon: Stephen Boyce | High weight: 250 in 2002 | Surgery weight: 203 | Lowest weight: 121 | Current weight: 135 | Goal weight: 135

It does depend on your surgeon but if you want over all between surgeries the mortality rate is about the same as the RNY here is a list I found. I am sure you can find many if you google it.

Studies # of DS patients in study DS Mortality/ Complication Rate Year
References:  MN, O, P
Study Q 1,000 Mortality - 0.1% postoperative (30-day)
Major Complications - 7%
2011
Study M 15 Mortality - 0%
Complications - 6.7%
2008
Study N 190 Mortality - 0%

Serious complications: 6.7% (BMI less than 50) 12% (BMI equal to or greater than 50)

Overall complications: 14.4% (BMI less than 50) 24% (BMI equal to or greater than 50)
2008
Study O 198 Mortality - 0.5% 2006
Study P 3,030 Mortality - 1.1% 2004

as you can see it is fairly low but if you get a surgeon who is not vetted it will go up.

The accepted 'standard' period of time is within 30 days of surgery.  I don't know if anyone specifically tracks a whole year.  Probably because it's not fair to the surgeon.

Overall stats is very similar to RNY, but you'll feel better getting your docs stats.  My doc's mortality rate was 0.2% according to the hospital (and not just her staff) she operated in.  I felt perfectly secure about that.

My surgions stated he never lost a patient in over 6k ds. Some popular surgions around here average one a year. Itso about the doctor and how bad offthe patient is going in.

Its 100% often prolonged for A substntianl period longer than the patient expected prior to surgory. Seldom.the causes of demise in itself.old age or auto accident more likely.
