Pronouncing it Wrong This Whole Time!

I guess when Dr. K was talking to me about my surgery, he would always say "DS" instead of "duodenal switch". Anyway, I've been pronouncing it "doo-WAH-de-nahl". When I told my regular doctor about my surgery, he corrected my pronunciation and said it was "duo-DEE-nal".

I even looked it up online to find out if he was right. He was.

Hahaha oops!

That's funny. My Doctor pronounces it the first way. It may explain some of the funny looks I get. :)

I have heard both ways regularly. I was taught the first one in school, but often hear surgeons say the second. I like the first way better. *shrugs*

I was taught to say "doo-WAH-de-nal." My anatomy professor was old-school. He also said "mede-AST-in-um, " but my PCP says "Media -STY-num."

Either way is correct.  Same with mediastinum.  And abdomen....I have worked with nurses who say ab-DOH-men.  Personal preference.  My surgeon is Lithuanian, so he says duo-DEE-nal.  Like he's not hot enough

Both ways are correct. You say Tomato, I say Tomahto, LOL. Potato, potahto

One of my favorite websites is TheFreeDictionary.com. If I'm unsure about how to pronounce a word I go there and look the word up. There's a little speaker icon thing you can click and actually hear how the word is supposed to be pronounced.
