RNY- 11 years out - Possible Cancer of Stomach

Hello everyone one.  I follow you guys all the time as I was considering a revision and DS.  I went down to the Cleveland Clinic in Ft. Lauderdale and they put me on a diet so I have dropped over 35 pounds.  My back went out about 3 weeks ago and while doing a MRI they saw a mass on my stomach so they wanted me to get a CAT scan.  I was feeling so bad that I put it off until last week.  My doc called me last Friday and said that it looks like I have lymph nods on my stomach and he is sending me in for a PET scan which is scheduled for this Saturday.  Now the reason for this post.  After doing my frantic research it looks like one of the things they do is to remove most of the stomach if not all of it.  It sounds like a DS.  Now to complicate things I have had the RNY about 11 years ago.  The testing I had shows my pouch is the size of a tennis ball at 11 years out.  To say that I am terrified is an understatement.  I wonder if you guys have run across anyone else that has had WLS and found stomach cancer.  I think that it is very important that I find the right doctor to take care of me and I don't know what to do.  I live very near the Mayo Clinic.  The reason why I am asking the board is because I know you always say go to the list for a revision and that very few people can do it.  So, my question is has anyone heard of anyone having this issue.  I can't be the only one.  I am looking for guidance.  I am being proactive with my health.  Also of note I have iron infusions about every 3- 4 months.  I am never quite up to par with iron.  I take B-12  spray once a week.  My D levels are low.

Any thoughts, comments would be appreciated!

Thank you in advance

Ali

M. Walker,

Thank you for all of your prayers and thoughts and good advice to stay positive.  I won't give up.

One thing WLS gave me late in life mid 40's was a husband and a son.  I had my son at 45 and he

is only 7 now.  I have no intention of leaving my son or my husband.  It took me so long to get them.

WLS surgery changed my life in every way and gave me the family that I craved for so long.  I have

no intention of leaving them one second before I have to.  I will go kicking and fighting that is for sure.

I have only had my husband in my life for 9 years and my son for 7.  It seems like a blink of the eye.

I am greedy!    Thanks again for your kind words and thoughts.

Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way, Ali. If I were facing something like this I would contact Vitalady or go on Vitalady's grads board and ask for their input and advice. Link: http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Graduate-OSSG/info.  I think that group has heard or personally dealt with just about everything.

Gina,

Thank you.  I will reach out to her and I will go to her board.  Thank you for the link.  Thank you for positive thoughts and prayers.

One thing is sure over the years before and after my WLS.  Obesity Help.com has helped me and the people here are always kind and generous and helpful.  Although I would not want to put my information just anyplace.  For some reason I always feel safe and accepted here.  Thanks again!  Keep those prayers coming I belief in them and need them.

Ali, so sorry you are going through this.  Are the nodes on your pouch or on the part of the stomach that is cut away and not used?

Gina's advice to go to the grads board is good.  I have seen people with many different conditions on there, although I must confess that this is something I have not seen there.

Have you tried the cancer forum here on OH?  Just a thought.

Sending positive thoughts your way.  Hang in there and let us know how you are getting on.

Sharon G,

Thank you for your advice and you have been very helpful.  I did not know there was a cancer board.  I am not sure where the nodes are.  I have been looking at the cat scan and MRI but to be honest, I don't understand it.  I will make sure and ask that question when I go in to see the doctor next week after the PET scan.  I just remember him telling me there are two nodes on my stomach. and then something about chemo.  This conversation was all on the phone.  He said don't worry we caught it early.

I have been doing test for the last week and looking things up on the internet.    I just thought of this forum because I had considered DS over the last year and had been coming here to read things.  When I did my research for stomach cancer some of the options sounded a lot like DS to me.  I will put your information to good use.  Thank you for taking the time help me and I appreciate all of the positive thoughts.  I will let you know what is going on when I get my final results next week.

With many thanks!

Just a thought, Ali, but if the nodes are on the part of the stomach that is cut away and not used there might be alternatives to treatment.  With the DS, our excess stomach is removed completely.

Will be thinking about you.  Please keep us updated.

Best wishes,

Sharon
