Almost 4 weeks, not doing well on eating

I don't think I am doing well nutrition wise.  I had an Open DS done on 8/22/13.  I have a valtrac which means I am still on a full liquid diet until Thursday.  I think I am consuming only about 300 calories a day, very little protein.  Yesterday I just smelled my protein shake and threw up.  Couldn't bring myself to drink it after.  Milk products like yogurt and most soups I am able to have upset my stomach.  I am not sure what to do.  I am hoping on Thursday when I can advance my diet I will be able to up my protein more. Frustrated, wondering if I am going to survive this :/

I had a hard time getting myself to get enough protein on the full liquid protein stage as well. It gets a little better on the soft food stage, but at almost 7 weeks I've come to realize I'm never going to get away from having at least one protein drink a day to get all of my protein in. I couldn't handle dairy until around week 4 or 5 and now my breakfast is usually 8oz of milk mixed with a scoop of unflavored protein, a little cinnamon, and a packet of splenda. It sits well and does not taste horrible. Decaf coffee mixed with vanilla unjury and a pack of splenda has also been working well. I also had a very low calorie intake until recently. I wasn't even getting 900 calories in a day.

Even now that I've been released to try whatever I want, as long as I get my protein in first, it is very difficult to get all of the protein in because I can't eat that much anymore. I was told to set an alarm to eat every 2 hours to help me get up to 90 grams a day.

Not sure if any of this made you feel better but I think what you are going through is normal. It is a huge life change and feels like I'm learning how/when to eat again.

It's hard not to get discouraged.  I HATE PROTEIN SHAKES.  I found a soy protein I can stand....EAS.  Not sure of its nutritional value, but at least I feel like I'm getting something in.  I am 4 1/2 months out and am just starting to feel like I'm interested in eating.  Hang in there, I do believe what you're going through is normal- was for me, anyway.

Early out I had cheesy scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt, egg drop soup and chili with lots of cheese. I also made cream cheese pancakes from http://www.ibreatheimhungry.com/2012/01/cream-cheese-pancake s.html I hope you find something you enjoy soon.

Maybe those protein jello/gelatin cups could help you.

The one pure protien I could get down after a few weeks was the home made shrimp ****tail.  So convienat and fast.  Already cooked large shrimp from the seafoood counter, and ****tail sauce, or butter.  I could onley do four, at first but it was a start.  When ever I get that dragging feeling its my go to "feel better" food.  Remember all thats expected from you protien wise is the 3/60/90 rule.  thirty grams a day, first month, 60 grams a day second month, 90 grams a day third month, and of course after that they want the full 120 grams a day.  Just do the best you can.  Im four months out, and I still have to drink three to four shakes a day, because things still make me gag.  Yeah I know pretty frustrating, but I really think its all normal, you just have to find what works for you....   Try to stick with the rule....  You either eat your protien or drink it, thats just the way it is....

If your tum cannot handle it, back off of the dairy for a bit.  Whey can give similar effects too, and even as far out as I am, the smell still makes me want to vomit too.  I second the suggestion of EAS soy protein.  It definitely sucks less.  I also like JRobbs eggwhite protein.  The flavor is weak, but no aftertaste and it mixes very well with things.

A very insightful thread - has anyone experienced the nauseating feeling from protein shakes when they were pre-op on their liquid diet?  I have four different mixes I use with milk and now I just want to vomit if I even smell them.  I was hoping this would pass, but am thankful for the suggestions posted above.

Hey, Clay!  I just read your profile, and wanted to say I'm so excited for you!  Love your pics, and you apparently have the travelin' bug!  Your weight loss is gonna make all of that even better, if you can imagine.....

Anyhoo, all whey isolate protein shakes repulse me.  I just toughed it out pre op (I would actually hold my breath and guzzle), and did more exploring post op.  As I said in a previous post, the only one I can tolerate is EAS soy.

Good luck to you, and please keep us posted!
