Calcium Help

Hi Everyone,

I had my yearly labs done and I need to up my calcium.  What is the best way to supplement to get all the calcium we need other than take 16 pills of it.  UGH!   I was looking at Vitalady's site and there was a few different options.  Anyone have any luck with these?  Dr. L gave me a prescription to take to help in the calcium absorption (I think that works in the colon).

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.  Other than that everything is good, 7 years in a few weeks.  YEAH!!!

lol  I wish! I'm still taking 12 capsules of Vitalady calcium citrate only. I have improved from osteoporosis to osteopenia but it's still a lot of pills. To the calcium I add a magnesium citrate capsule and a little tablet of boron with every calcium dose. I take 50,000IUs of dry vitamin D3 and 600mcg of vitamin K2 a day. It seems to be working for me. Good luck!

Sorry to hijack this post, but is the 1,500 mg of Calcium Citrate I'm currently taking not enough?? I'm taking three of the Bariatric Advantage Caramel Chewy bites (spaced out throughout the day) which have 500 mg each.

I'm still two months out from my first labs, but would like to start off correctly, rather than having to play catch up later down the road.

Thanks!

Amy I am not an expert at all but I think the guideline for calcium is 2400-3000 per day for us.  I'm hoping that those chews you take are the right kind because if they are I'll be ordering them. :)

The chews are really yummy! And they are the correct calcium, I believe: Calcium Citrate.

https://www1.bariatricadvantage.com/catalog/us-en/2/Calcium (third one down - Chewy Bites - 500 mg)

I also get another 450 mg from the multivitamins I take (also calcium citrate). I thought I remember Dr. Keshishian recommending 1500 mg per day, so that's what I've been taking! indecision

Thanks Gina.

Have you tried any of those chews she has or are they the wrong kind of Calcium?  I will order some of her Calcium citrate only, at least they are a double dose per pill from what I am taking.  Dr. L suggested 3,000 (?) per day of calcium.

My Vitamin D was high last year (107) so I cut back on those 50,000IUs.  I will order some of those also since my D is at 67.

I have the magnesium citrate from Vitalady and I'll order the boron to take with the calcium.

I'll have labs done for those in 6 months to see if it is working.

Thanks again, I hope everything is well with you.

I think the BA chews are a good idea if you'd like to mix things up a bit. The calcium citrate only capsules are 300mg per capsule so a dose is 2 capsules. I'm taking 3,600mg a day. My osteo issues started pre-op but have been able to gain ground over the past year or so.

I just placed an order with Vitalady and I think she's running specials on all her BA calcium chews.

which is your fave flavor? I got a coupla big jugs of cinnamon, which I loved then suddenly, they are not interesting. Both opened, tho.

Ditto, pretty much.

12 of the calc only
1 D3-50
4 of the tiny boron
4 Osteo-Tech (which is the MCHC) that Dr. Hess prefers (I'm not convinced this is a good idea, though)
but only 300mcg of the K2

I take the calcium in 4 batches, so divvie up the boron and others within those groups.

I take 2 of the Strontium 300 mg at bedtime, with my other "unfriendlies".

My dexa improved from horrible to bad. My endo thinks it's the reclast. He doesn't believe the massive weight loss and malnutrition had anything to do with anything, so the slow regain to my correct wt will carry (oop***** no weight for him. He'll still credit this year's reclast if I have a +.

BUT my osteoporosis was not diagosed til 8/2000, fully 6 yrs after WLS and no tests pre-op. Iit's very possible that I had entered bone loss long before from the repetitive dieting.

The studies you'd want to look up would be bone loss in astronauts.

Wow, I miss being here.

the edit function has changed, or is bewildering to me.

I also use 1 scoop of the BA Crystals with each protein drink. The dose is 2 scoops = 600mg, BUT 2 scoops messes with the flavor for me. Since I drink protein all day long again, I get that 300 many times per day.

I have no idea the total mg, but I'd place it around 8000 mg of calcium. 3600 in the calc only alone.
