Ketosis - how low carb can you go without going into it

I believe getting too much protein in will eventually stall the weight loss.  As I have lost weight, I have recalculated my protein requirements every 10 lbs.

Some believe that getting 120gms of protein from shakes, then eating protein on top of that, is the way to go.  It may work for them, but it stopped working for me years ago.  A long time ago I read the body will convert the excess protein into sugar - and that sugar will get stored as fat or burned for fuel-  before the body will use the fat already on the body for fuel, which is what I want it to do.  My body is very efficient at using every ounce of protein I eat and converting it to sugar.

The types of carbs do matter on weight loss.  You absorb around 60% of complex carbs.  Simple carbs are absorbed at 100%.  So eliminate simple carbs and restrict your complex carbs.  Yes, you will see a difference in total weight loss if you get your carbs from veggies verses eating candy or cake.  For me, it's more a matter of simple carbs causing diarrhea and gas that makes me eat less of them.  I can't be around people if I have to stay in the bathroom or my gas singes the nose hair.

Starting with 100 carbs is good.  Every week lower it by 5 till you see a 2 lb loss and that is where you hover for a while.  As you lose weight, you will also have to drop your carb intake to keep losing.  While everyone here will tell you not to count calories, calories do count.  As we lose weight, we do need to drop our total food intake (or start exercising really hard) to keep it going.

Good luck.

When you say lower it by 5 carbs every wee****il you see a 2 lb loss, do you mean a 2 lb loss in one week's time?

Yes, a 2 lb loss in one week.  Or, you can lower your carbs till you see a 5 lb loss every week.

Personally, I would go for as much weight loss as you can in the early stages because it is true that this is your 'honeymoon' period.  You will get to the state where you will be grateful for the 2 lbs a week loss - so loose as much as you can as fast as you can.  It really does slow down later on.

But losing it slowly has it's advantages also.  I have a lot less hormones surging through my blood now - so I am more rationale and less irritable.   And if I do have a high carb day, my weight doesn't go up or down.

I'm actually approaching 3 yrs out post-surgery.  So, I too would be incredibly happy with 2 lbs of wt loss in a week.  I wish I had worked my honeymoon stage for more--even just losing an additional 10 lbs is HUGE!  Because that's 10 lbs you aren't struggling to lose when the honeymoon stage passes.  Every lb counts during the honeymoon stage.  I wish I had understood that better when I was in the honeymoon stage but I actually got freaked out when I would see myself sometimes drop a lb a day, day after day, or weight less in the afternoon than I did that morning.  I actually sabotaged my honeymoon period some because that fast wt loss scared me a little.  Having said all that, my profile pick I have up is from several lbs back.  I really should update it.  I look much better than the profile pick I have up.
