Hospital Stay Questions

How many nights do you stay in the hospital after DS?  I heard 2 or 3.  I have an upcoming surgery scheduled and trying to plan accordingly with my little kiddos!  Also, I haven't seen/read much about pain in the hospital after surgery.  I've had 2 c-sections so I can handle pain.  But I'm hoping that since this will be done laparoscopically it won't be nearly as painful!

I have a one year old and a three year old so I totally understand :)  I was in for two nights and that seemed to be the norm for DS patients in the hospital.  Pain after surgery is there but they keep you on pain meds in the hospital and give you some to take home.... it's more just very uncomfortable but i didn't face any REALLY bad pain with the medication provided.  I have also had two c-sections so it was a walk in the park :) Hope that helps!

Thank you!  That is exactly what I was hoping to hear....a walk in the park after 2 c-sections. :)

I was in the hospital three nights. Surgery on Tuesday, discharged on Friday. (I had mine done lap, not open.) I think it all depends on the surgeon. Dr. K. wouldn't let me leave until I farted (LOL). That didn't happen until my last day.

The pain in the hospital was manageable. I didn't feel much pain, mainly just soreness around my incisions. They gave me a button to press -- I would press it about 10 - 15 minutes before I wanted to get up to move around.

My DS was open and I spent 4 nights in the hospital.  I had a pain ball with tiny incisions near my belly wound to control the pain directly, and a morphine drip for the bulk of the pain.  I barely knew my name, but I knew how many more minutes I had on my magic button.  I would say with the wonders of modern technology, my pain level was around a 3, but my discomfort was at a 7 or so...to be expected, right?  Plan on more help with the small ones when you get home too, especially if they're babies, for you cannot lift/push/pull more than 8 lbs for 8 weeks.

Hi,

I spent 2 nights in the hospital and the pain was  not bad at all. I also had two C-sections and the pain was much worse with those. I also didn't have any issues with my DS surgery and was allowed to shower the next morning!! Best of luck.

I had my DS in Mexicali with Dr. Aceves.  I consider my self very lucky to be under his care, I got to stay a whole six days....Thats his normal stay for the DS.  I know this isnt the norm in the U.S.

If you've gotten through 2 c-sections, this lap DS truly will be a walk in the park!  I compare the lap DS discomfort to that of my lap GB 5 years earlier.  Mild discomfort.

I was in the hospital 2 nights.  I could have been discharged the day after surgery, but I had some nausea issues to deal with.

You're gonna do fine!

Mine was on a Tuesday and I was discharged on Friday.  I, too, had to pass gas before they would even let me start on the liquid diet, so I was able to start those "meals" on Friday.  I had no pain, just discomfort from the gas in my abdomen, so I was really glad for several reasons when I did pass gas.  I never even got the script for pain meds filled at the pharmacy when I went home.  Each of us are different in how our bodies will be affected, but it seems the average is 2-4 nights.  Best of luck!

Mine was lap and I was scheduled to stay in the hospital 3 nights.  However, I ended up staying 5 nights due to potassium issues and excess drainage that the doctors wanted to monitor before I could be discharged.  Besides that, the weather was unseasonably hot during my stay and the weather had already started to cool off by the time I got discharged.
