Hi I'm 6 1/2 years out from RNY and I have late dumping with reactive hypo. I can only eat meat, nuts a few veggies .I just started getting sick about 2 mos ago. I also get iron infusions. I can't live a normal life no more cant even work right now and I'm 32 yrs old. So I was wondering if anyone on here has had a revision for something similar ? The Drs on base are no help and I finally got referred to UCSF. I really don't want to live like this the rest of my life.

It seems like we are seeing someone new asking about revision of RNY to DS at least once a week these days. Yes, it can be done, but there are only a few surgeons who do it because it is a very complex and difficult operation. the people at UCSF may be great at other things, but they do not do DS at all, let alone revise RNY to DS. To accomplish this, the surgeon must completely take apart your old RNY, put your stomach back together like it originally was, take apart the connection of the pouch to the small intestine, etc., and THEN do the full DS. I have no idea what UCSF will offer you, if anything, but it won't be a DS.

You do have the great good fortune, however, to be in CA, where there are two excellent surgeons who do these revisions. they are

Dr. John Rabkin of Pacific laparoscopy in San Francisco, and

Dr. Ara Keshishian in Glendale.

That's it. There is no one else in CA for this. There are others across the country, but since you're in CA, these are the surgeons who would make the most sense.

Thanks for the reply I seen that Dr Rabkin is on my provider list so I will probably switch it to him. I'm just not sure if they cover revision to a DS. I'm also thinking maybe I should just drive 8 hours to my original Dr Milton Owens he is top in CA and maybe there is some other surgery that could help me.

Are you military? They have a wonderful bariatric program at Madigan (in Washington state) called Pathway. They have several surgeons there who do the revision from RNY to DS. There are Military dependents who have come up here to have revision surgery with Dr Carter or Dr Martin- both excellent surgeons and yes they have both done a lot of revisions and are very skilled. I had a revision with Dr Carter and he was superb. I have no regrets except I wish I had done this surgery 8 years ago instead of the RNY. It honestly has restored my quality of life. I would check with TriCare and see what they say.

Good luck- I can understand not wanting to live with the RNY when you have complications.

I had absolutely no complications. I was in the hospital for 5 days and the care I received was outstanding. In one year I will go back in for a tummy tuck and a hernia repair which I had prior to surgery. They repaired it the best they could but I have a weak abdominal wall so need some reinforcement. I will get that done in March- hopefully! They have a great program up here and wonderful surgeons to work with,

Good luck in your journey. See if TriCare can refer you to someone who is close by you there.
