Did anyone cheat on their pre op diet?

I have done some crazy and extreme things to lose weight, but I have never been able to pull off a liquid diet. I need to chew to feel sated. I am very intimidated by the pre op diet. Even if it is only for two weeks.

Who's your surgeon? *I* think a two-week liquid diet is nothing but torture. It's impossible to actually shrink your liver in less than several MONTHS---the real goal of a pre-op diet is to deplete the glycogen stores in your liver, making it less 'slippery' to work with. This is accomplished by going LOW CARB---there's absolutely NO benefit of a liquid diet over a moderate-calorie, high-protein, low-carb diet of REAL FOOD.

My surgeon didn't require any sort of pre-op diet, just clear liquids the day before surgery. And I was HUGE.

ONLY 2 weeks?  That's a long time to me.  My surgeon only required a 5 day liquid diet.  And boy, was I miserable.  It was so emotional for me with this surgery looming, then taking away my security blanket (food), it's a miracle my poor husband survived that week!

I guess what I'm trying to say is, you've come this far, keep your eye on the prize.  Fill your time with other things- meditate, walk, pray.....

I have read about people who have cheated, however, I never saw any follow up on what happened as a result.  It would suck to go through all that, and the surgeon not be able to do the surgery bc your big fatty liver was in the way!

Good luck to you!  (It's only 2 weeks...you can do it!)

I had to do 2 weeks. I made it through my sons wedding luncheon and reception and my moms 80 th surprise party. It was hard but I did it. Egg drop soup was my favorite. Good luck!

Chew gum, maybe? Sugar free of course.

Yupppp, I cheated. i basically did my liquid shake morning and lunch and then had a small supper. I had NOTHING to eat in bt however. Day before surgery which was a Sunday, I had my traditional pasta family meal. Surgery went textbook.

I mentioned all this to the surgeon, and she just nodded her head and said..."you'll be fine".

So as far as I'm concerned, you'll be fine. What I 've learnt is that aftyer surgery your body has so dramatically changed that you literally can not be as impulsive as you were before and the surgery literally keeps you in check. I'm so glad I had my last supper before the surgery because since surgery I have had no carbs and have no desire for it either.

Good Luck!

I was required to do 2 weeks liquid only as well to help shrink my liver.  I probably only did about 1 week of that.  LOL

I think it's an unreasonable thing to ask.  LOL!  If I could stick to nothing but liquids I probably would have never been in a position to need weight loss surgery, right?  LOL!   Do the absolute best you can, and if you do slip up, stay away from sugar, bread, pastas, rice, etc!  When I did cheat it was with lean protein.

(I never told my surgeon about my cheating, but after surgery  I did ask him how my liver looked and he said "pretty good") I'll take that!  LOL!

It does seem arbitrary from one Doctor to the next. I did the 2 week liquid diet. It let me focus on something besides the surgery date. It also helped a little in preparing me for the post op liquid phase right after surgery. Just do your best.

Talk to your surgeon or his/her nutritionist.  Often the liquid factor is only need a few days prior to surgery to help make sure the bowels are empty (although usually you do a bowel prep too).

Some surgeons are fine with a simple low/reduced calorie diet.  Others are fine with you substituting lean protein and salad, or yougurt, for the shakes.

Ask. :)
