question about digestive enzymes

I've been reading from several people on here that digestive enzymes are not good for a DSr  if you are trying to lose weight.

I take some digestive enzymes and am wondering if I should give them up if its going to slow my weight loss down when I have

surgery. If you are familiar with this or have any experience with digestive enzymes please help me to understand why this

slows down the weight loss. I have a friend who had part of his stomach removed because of ulcers and they recently put him

on enzymes to get his weight back up but I didn't put the two together until a few days ago when it was mentioned on here.

Thanks a bunch!

The DS intestinal portion induces an amount of malabsorbtion as part of the change in the way the body metabolizes food.  To take digestive enzymes, you are fighting against that benefit.  DSer's who are dangerously underweight take these enzymes to GAIN WEIGHT....so yeah...stop taking them.

All I know is that some surgeons will prescribe a digestive enzyme, such as Creon, to help some folks slow or stop their weight loss or help them absorb nutrients from their food and vitamins.  We are talking digestive enzymes and not probiotics, right?

I take Creon ( Rx enzyme) because I am hyper-malabsorptive.  It is in effect a pharmaceutical revision.

Creon has *never*  made me gain weight in the 4 years I've been taking it.

It was prescribed after some "iffy"  trends in my early labs.  Have been on it since 2009 , one 24000 unit with every meal or snack.

Why were you put on digestive enzymes?

Thanks for the info- I appreciate the responses. I take digestive enzymes to help with some of the food sensitivities I have. I am gluten intolerant and sensitive to dairy. I can do cheese and butter but not mil**** cream etc so enzymes help. I try to avoid certain foods.

That is the craziest thing I have heard in a long time.  If you are trying to loose weight you need to get OFF the digestive enzymes and DON'T EAT foods that offend you.

I haven't eaten gluten in 3 1/2 years.  I can't drink milk but I can use Heavy Cream.  I can do hard cheese but not soft.

Whoever thought digestive enzmes during weight loss is a nut.  Who advised that? It also makes me concerened that you were given other bad advise.  What is your eating plan?  Vitamin schedule?

Thanks Becky. I developed a lot of my food sensitivities after I had the RNY.  I was put on enzymes by  a Naturepath about 6 years ago. Right now my anatomy is pretty messed up with the fistula. Maybe once I have my revision done things will change a little. I don't expect my gluten, soy or dairy intolerance to go away but it has been very helpful to learn that enzymes don't help with weightloss. I try to be gluten free, soy free and as much dairy free as possible. Sometimes its all very overwhelming.
