My surgeon did not require my GP to medically clear me. He had me do all the tests he wanted done and HE medically cleared me. He had my GP write a letter saying she would follow me for non surgical issues post surgery. Which she agreed to, of course. I think you surgeon is asking too much of your GP. Did your GP order and review all your pre-op tests?

it is not that unusal for a surgeon to ask for surgical clearance. as a PCP your dr should perform a physical on you, and answer general questions ----they are on a form from the surgeon, your PCP is in my opinion needs to be replaced if he/she is not willing to do this, which is part of a pcp's job (primary dr) then post DS you will be fighting an uphill battle---get a new dr now...
I just had plastic surgery last month. My surgeon needed my PCP clearance, and asked for an EKG, and blood test, both done in her office. She had no problem doing this for me, after I came in for a health check. She wanted to know all about my surgery, what the surgeon was going to cut. She has taken an interest in my journey from D.S. to plastics. Admitting she knew nothing about a D.S., but she said I did, and this was fine with her. We make a good team. She listens to me about my needs, and arranges labs when I ask for them. My last 2 PCP's were not as prepared to venture out into the unknown handling a patient with the D.S., or anything else out of the ordinary. Finding a new PCP you like takes time, but is well worth the effort.
