what is your diet like?

I do track my carbs simple and complex and lump them all together and try and keep myself under 50 grams a day. My protein goal is 125-150 grams a day, but when I was at the stage you are at I was doing well to get 90-100 grams a day of protein.

MY typical day at soft food stage was

B: scrambled eggs with cheese

S: Protein drink

L: tuna salad

S: Protein drink

D: Chicken salad or sour cream mixed with very fine ground beef with cheese

Now at 7+ months post-op an ideal day is:

B: 6-8 pieces of bacon & 2 scrambled eggs

S: Protein coffee, (6oz of coffee cold, 2-3 oz of half&half, ice cubes, and 1.5 scoops Dymatize Elite Protein powder in chocolate or vanilla, 2 splendas, If I do vanilla I add caramel flavoring)

L: tuna salad with lots of Miracle Whip, grape tomatoes

S: Cheese

D: Steak, green beans

S: Protein coffee made with decaf

I hope this helps. Good luck and chek out Bites, Vites and exercites it gives you a good idea of the day to day life of a dser.

I had surgery with Dr. Kim too.  if you get protein shakes, i suggest you get protein premiere, its more creamy, and can only be bought at sams or cosco for $18 a pkg.  30g of protein! and 5g of carbs, 160 calories.

also there is another protein drink called world premiere with 35g of protein, 170 calories,  4g of carbs. not as creamy but stil good.  They are at the Vitamin shoppe for $30 for a 12pk.  (way to high)

the only flavor i get is chocolate though.  they both remind me of chocolate milk, and i love chocolate milk.  i was never able to drink protein drinks until a week ago! and i had my surgery in october.  i finally found a protein drink that i like! and they make me full!  both protein drinks have 1-2g of sugar.   Well best of luck to you!

A carb is a carb.  I stay away from them still at 3 years out unless I am in a bad period which I recently went through when I ate candy like it was going out of style (I gained weight).

So I limit ALL my carbs.  If some carbs come with a lot of protein I may take that, but not regularly.

All processed foods come with a carb count and protein count on them.  You can look up other foods like fruits and vegetables (both of which I do not eat very much of AT ALL.)

My diet is meat, eggs, greek yogurt flavored with SF strawberry jelly and splenda, and cheese and protein bars.  For the first two years I drank a lot of protein drinks too.  I don't stray too far from this. Here is one example of what I do.  I LOVE Mexican.  So when I have that I have a taco salad (meat, cheese, lettuce and a little salsa with extra extra sour cream.  I don't eat the chips or tortillas.  But all that meat and cheese fills me up.  The only carbs come from the salsa.

You can also see a LOT of what people eat on the daily Bites and Vites thread.  That goes back several years on a daily basis.

I had surgery with Dr. Kim back on 9/17/2012.  Doing OK, I've lost about 50 lbs since surgery.  I've found that they want you to maintain a "healthy" diet, and won't give me a number of carbs to shoot for.   They take the approach Valerie says, if you eat 120 gms of protein daily, you aren't going to have room for much else.  If you do, eat veggies because they are complex carbs for the most part.  Stay away from refined carbs because they will make you sorry from gas pains/smells.  If you avoid the simple carbs and fill up on protein, you supposedly can't help but lose weight.  I also found out that my common channel is rather long compared to some, they said about 120 to 150 cm.  I see a lot of people out here with 50 cm channels, I'm thinking that may slow down the weight loss a bit since we have more intestine to absorb food with.  But I'm no expert.  enlightened

I just do my best to get in protein and avoid carbs.  Last night made casserole for the family, chicken on the bottom topped with stuffing, I ate the bottom with the chicken and the rest of the family ate the whole casserole.  When I make beef stew, I pick out mostly meat.  If I have to eat fast food I eat sandwiches without the bun.  And please don't tell me how awful it is because I know it, but when i get chicken nuggets i go to chickfila because 12 count nuggets there are 42gms of protein 17 carb, at Mcdonalds you have to eat a 20 piece to get 44gm protein and its 59 carbs, because the breading is so thick.  I try not to do it, but sometimes I need my nuggets.  :-)  I'm not much for beef, I've always been a chicken girl.

I like the world according to egg face.  She has a lot of good recipes, i made some great mini quiche yesterday from her "bites" recipe, and I've tried several others, I've liked everything I've tried.  Keep in mind she's RNY so not everything she says applies to us, but the recipes are high in protein low in sugar, and she prefers to include some fat in her cooking which is good for us.

I asked.  You should see the list of questions I had on my first visit with David.  I had a notebook.  And I had seen people talking about it out here so I was curious.  I'm not sure if that's for everyone, but my BMI was so high, I started this surgery process at 314 (I'm a lapband revision too) so my BMI was something like 54.  I've had the impression from these boards that 50cm to 70 cm seemed to be a common length.  I'm happy with the longer channel, to me that means even if it takes a little longer to lose it all, my body has more of an advantage in absorbing protein and vitamins.  :-)

BTW, be ready for the first blood draw to get your vitamins checked.  drink a ton of water before, at least as much as you can, you need to be hydrated for all the vials they will take.  I didn't realize that they checked your blood sugar at the same time, so I made the mistake of going in immediately after lunch so mine was a little high.

Remember,  you are still doing OK.  Your body is going through a lot and will stall at times.  I know people that have gone 3 weeks without loosing then suddenly dropped 20 lbs in a matter of  days.  Also, even though you think you should loose a lot because you aren't eating, your body will also fight it more right now because of healing and because it's worried about the drastic cut in calories, and its impulse to conserve when it thinks you are starving.  The body is a furnace, it has to have fuel to burn.  Once you start getting in more protein and food and moving around more, it will get better.  :-)

With the common channel, remember the small intestine is on average 20 feet, the large is 6 feet.  Even if you were 200 CM you would still get the benefit of malabsorption, but better vitamin absorption.  I have to say (no offense to anyone on this board)  I've seen people lose a little slower, and I've seen people loose the weight scary fast (friends with a DSer that had the 50cm) and slower can definitely be better.  You will still get there, but it's OK if it takes a year to a year and a half instead of 6 months.  You'll be healthier for it in the long run.

You are doing great for only being two weeks out!  Do a happy dance!
