Calcium & scheduling other vite doses

So I've read that we should take a minimum of 2,000mg calcium in doses of 500mg at a time (citrate or hydroxyapatite just not carbonate).  I've also read that we should split calcium from our other batches of vites and calcium can inhibit the absorption of them.  I'm also splitting out my zinc as I low despite taking 100mg a day (I'm now doing 150).  I also have 2 batches of liquid iron I take at night.   ... so how do you get all of the following doses in??  I know it's just about possible, but I'm not sure if this is realistic in the long term. TIA   Calcium x 4 Iron x 2 Vites x 3 Zinc x 2

I've been thinking about this for a few days what with all the calcium threads flying about.  Glad I'm not the only one.  Taking 2 hourly vites just isn't realistic long term IMO (ie in 10 years' time will I still be doing this).

I dont have answers, just an observation. I dont have to take iron supplements. I get iv's. I was thrilled when the hematologist told me I didnt absorb iron. It made my whole vitamin regime so much easier.

Good luck. I hope someone can provide you with some good workable solutions.

Thanks. Iron infusions seem like a real headache and I couldn't afford the time off work right now. I'm hoping adding vit C and copper gets my numbers up.

Agree that vitamin schedule is less complicated without the iron.  Regarding calcium, someone posted on this board a long time ago that he kept calcium tablets in candy dishes on desk at work and on ****tail table at home so they were always readily available.  Tried that but it didn't help me.  Once had to take Tums for acid reflux and was OK with the taste of the berry flavor so thought that might be a good idea - except it is carbonate.  However, recently found berry flavored Calcium Citrate lozenges that I like.  Keep them in my car, backpack, end tables, next to kitchen sink, and in my pockets at all times and eat them like candy throughout the day.  Take additional 1000mg calcium hydroxyapatite each day, often twice that.

The supplement regimen can be a PIA, but being fat and unhealthy was MORE of a P.I.A.  IMO taking so many supplements for the rest of my life is a small price to pay to get to be thin and healthy.

I take my calcium at the tail end of my morning and evening batches. It takes about 30 - 45 minutes to take them so I figure I'm giving them a fighting chance. I take several batches during the day but I only give them an hour or so space between calcium batches.

I was just comparing Vitalady's schedule with my dietitian's and she just makes her calcium batches 900mg doses instead of 600mg doses. I thought that was interesting and it requires less batches during the day.

hi Gina.

Is there any evidence to support the 500mg per dose claim - which I've heard(read) repeated elsewhere...maybe on OSU's Linus Pauling site?  I think, for me, the biggest problem is trying to get 2400mg (as recommended by Rabkin's ofc) per day @ 500mg a pop without stepping on other vites.  Are you dosing @ 900mg per batch & has it been working for you?

I also noticed Vitalady's pre-packaged vitamin routine for the DS has 600mg of "elemental" calcium citrate in 3 doses per day.  I'm not clear if her elemental calcium doses and say a Vitacost 500mg per dose is similar.  Does that make sense?

Anyway wondering what other's are thinking as well.  --Sharon

Calcium citrate products like Citracal Maximum have 630 mg elemental calcium per 2 caplets.   Some brands are made with just 500 mg per 2 caplets.  I take the 630 in an attempt to get as much as I can.  ;o)

Keep in mind that all you read about calcium absorption is aimed at normies. We can take 600mg at a dose and only get about half of that due to our fast transit times and malabsorption. I take 2 doses of 900mg Vitalady calcium citrate elemental but the rest are 600mg doses for a total of 3600mg per day. I'm also taking boron and Vitalady's magnesium citrate capsules at the same time. I hope I'm absorbing more than the average DS bear, in part because I take capsules rather than tablets with a lot of fillers. My labs look great, so I'm guessing it's working. I still had bone loss immediately post-op but I already had osteopenia pre-op. My dexa scans are getting better now and osteocalcin is improving. My caIcium, D3 and PTH are great, and have been, since starting on Vitalady's plan.  I also take plenty of dry D3 and my labs hang around 100 and I take 4000mcg of vitamin K2 a day as well.

Linus Pauling's site is awesome. I've read there for hours on end.  : )
