How many calories?
We were told not to worry about calories and just keep your carbs low (under 50) and your protein up and a little over 100 grams. If you're low carbing you don't have to worry about calories. Never counted calories. Sorry.

Yep, what Gina said. Just follows Aktins and you'll do fine. I have heavy cream, cheese, bacon, etc. I'm sure I EASILY get 2-3 times that amount of calories, but I don't count them.
Have a look at Bites n Vites which MajorMom posts every day to get an idea of what DSers are eating.

Your surgeon is spouting RNY crap. DSers do not need to count calories. Count your protein (get at least 125 grams per day) and count your carbs (keep under 100 g per day). If you are having any constipation issues, up the fat. A normie needs about 35 g of fat per day to function. We malabsorb 80% of the fat we eat....so to absorb our 35, we need to consume at least 175 g per day.

I never once counted calories. All I count is protein and fluids.
That being said, I agree that 600-800 seems way too low. High protein and high fat items that we need have many more calories. To get 100g of protein with these items would be near impossible to stay in that tiny range. We haven't even begun to compute the DS Math yet. either. Discard what he told you!

ITA with everyone. The dietician at the surgeon's office told me that I should take in 3000 calories per day because of the malabsorption. She is not the answer for a DS nor does she have any answers!!! I have not counted calories, just protein and carbs. I did count fat at first but decided to focus on what matters.
I am 4.5 mo out. There are days, I eat a lot!!! At least it seems that way. Then other days my tummy won't let me so I do more Protein shakes that day. I always do yogurt 30 min after I wake up and take my Nexium. An hour later (except for weekends), a protein shake.
Calories are NOT informative. In other words they DO NOT COMPUTE. They are totally meaningless.
What DOES count is how much PROTEIN you eat (100-200 grams a day for most of us) and how FEW carbs you eat.
It really is that simple. If you try to keep your calories down there is NO WAY you will get enough protein and you WILL become malnourished. Stop listening to your doc who doesn't know what he is talking about and probably thinks you got a RnY anyway. Listen to the people here who have LIVED with the DS. (Mine was 9/30/09).
Happy loosing!!!
