Protein, how much???
I have been in a rut for while now, gained some weight back. I have an autoimmune disease that requires I take steroids and have been on them probably half of the past year. It sucks! So, I crave all the wrong foods. So, can anyone say exactly how much protein as a DSer should we eat? I am also on blood thinners, so I have a food restriction there as well. It has been a struggle to say the least! Thanks all for your feedback!
How much protein we need can be determined by your labs. I was advised to add more protein to my 120g a day. Doubling this to 250 only helped my protein rise 0.2 in 3 months. They said 50% of the protein we take is not absorbed. Now I need to be over 250 each day. I dont seem to be absorbing enough protein. Usually I have double scoop protein shakes, chicken and steak. I couldnt get enough protein without shakes several times a day. My weight is steady, with a lower than normal amount of fat. Upping my protein always helps me drop a few lbs. Omit sugar, flour, pasta, bread, crackers, and starchy veggies. No fruit while you are trying to lose. My allergies restrict my food choices. no eggs, shrimp, lobster, tuna, fish, and some nuts. I crave carbs sometimes, have them, then later wished I didn't.
According to my labs about 2 years ago, my magic number is 120 grams in protein shakes. My dietitian and I tested it. I went from 4 - 30 gram shakes a day to 3 and my albumin and prealbumin dropped. She said to go back to 4 shakes a day.

Hmmm, learn something new every day! I was only drinking 2 protein shakes a day and my protein was on the low end at 6.9. I added an afternoon one and will see in a few months how that affects me. I also eat eggs and meat and other things. I'd guess I'm right around 100-120 grams a day of protein but as everyone has said it depends on the person really. I know I couldn't get no where near what I need without the shakes though. I have been feeling very run down lately and so I am hoping adding more shakes will give me some added pep.
