what is wrong with me I am to the point it to much work to cook

When my youngest is at her dads I find myself drinking my protein shake, snacking on trail mix and eating beef jerky.  Yesterday I did have a couple of cutties which I know are carbs and not going to help with the stall I have been in for a few months.  Surgical date 2/14/12 154.  Have been taking work out class 4 days a week.  I went hiking yesterday up T bird mountain it took me 30 minutes up and 20 down.  Have not done the mountain since surgery oddly I think I was in better shape prior to surgery or at least it seemed harder yesterday.  For the most part I do feel more flexible without my 50 pound tummy.

Back to the point is there any one out there that fines them self getting lazy and just opting out of a meal for a shake or snack foods?  Long term could this be a bad thing reason being during the week I tend to do this at work.

Thanks

Donna

This is why I don't ever cook just enough for one meal.  It's not worth having to clean the kitchen.  That's why I cook once every 2 weeks or so and portion and freeze.  Then I have my own fast food ready to go.  And I can save money on family size packs of meat too!

Protein shakes are an easy alternative but I've never found any I like.  I can force myself to drink them but it's like bad medicine to me!

Some think the protein shake I like has to many carbs but I do think it takes good it Champion chocolate.  That is such a good idea.  I had my eye on a machine that sealed bags and you could just toss the end result in the freezer and avoid freezer burn.  Perhaps that will be one of my Christmas presents....................

So in your opinion I am not hurting myself with not having a traditional meal?

As long as you get your protein in, and take your vites, it's all good!

I feel the very same way about cooking, and eating. Since I need 200g + protein, the only way I can get it is to drink lots of double scoop protein shakes. My snacks are protein jerkee, nuts, chicken wings, rare thin sliced steak- cold or hot. my last labs were deficient in only 3 categories- RBC, glucose, and protein. The low glucose they think is from not eating enough close to the blood draw. A 12 hr fast is a fast, not eating is the point, right?  They tell me the RBC is from an iron deficiency, even though the iron categories look fine. I looked up how to fix low RBC/iron= lots of foods that are packed with iron. This week I tried a lot of them, adding steak to my  weekly diet. Liver is the highest for iron. Not my fav, but pate is good on crackers, with cheese. I'm going to make my own. I have to eat healthy with more  iron rich foods to boost my labs for plastic surgery recovery in 2 weeks.

To answer your question- I have been having all the same diet as you for about a year. My labs have been fine until now. In the spring my hematologist will be ordering iron injections/ infusions. Keep close tabs on your labs, even if the PCP thinks you are fine. My PCP only suggested a snack to boost my low glucose. I e-mailed my surgeons bariatric specialist. She told me all about the iron rich foods, sent me her list,  and  impressed upon me the need to up my protein well over 200-250g.

How far out are you from D.S. surgery? What you are doing now may be enough for you, but later, months from now you may need more. I am at the maintaining stage. I must eat more to stop my weight loss. When I was in the losing phase I ate only steak, chicken, cheese, yogurt. My carbs were 20-30g a day. I had shakes too. I'm allergic to eggs, shrimp, lobster, tuna, white fish and a few kinds of nuts. I wanted to be in ketosis to lose, and get to goal within the first year, when it is easier to lose. I did it in 8 months. If you eat too many carbs, even though they are healthy foods like veggies or fruit, it can slow your loss. I always had lots of protein, plenty of fluid, and lots of gym exercise with weight lifting machines, and a trainer to push me( just for a few months to learn the machines). You must be sure to have all your vitamins and supplements everyday. I did not cheat the entire 8 months. It was easy because I set my mind to it, for good health, I want a long life to enjoy my kids and grand kids. I loved watching the weight fall off. Now I am preparing for plastic surgery. Life just gets better and better.

P.S. I can only eat meat that is fresh cooked. Its more moist, tender, and flavorful. Nothing I cook ahead looks appetizing to me. Some of my medications are limiting my desire for food. This is why drinking shakes is the best way to meet my protein requirements. I could never eat enough to reach my suggested protein levels.

120 sounds like a good number to try for. If you want to lose, my bariatric specialist said not to go over 250. Personally, I followed the Atkins first 2 week plan, but ate only the protein, no veggies or fruit, supplementing with all kinds of protein drinks, and water. They told me to have at least 32oz plain water a day, the body uses it directly for hydration, rather than going through many steps when the water is mixed with other things. I didn't count calories, just ate my fill of meat, cheese.... stop eating when comfortable, not full. Think of eating as a snack, never a full meal. I ate any time I wanted, never felt hungry.

Now they tell me it takes time for the protein numbers to rise on my labs, with all the doubling of scoops of protein shakes. They were not surprised my level rose 0.2 in 3 months. I wonder if anyone has been told their protein numbers are too high, back off eating meat? With about 50% protein being utilized, I don't think I will ever have too much protein on board, I cant eat or drink any more than I am now. Some days are better than others, I don't frustrate about the daily numbers any more, as long as all my doctors are happy with my health. I passed my major physical with my internist, for plastic surgery approval this week. I must be doing something right. !!!  ;-)

Good luck with your protein efforts. I'ts a learning process for sure. ;-)
