BTW, this was my first attempt at eating brown rice.  It has been ok except for giving me gas.  Also, the GI Dr wants me to go off all dairy because he thinks I have become totally lactose intolerant.  I'm trying to use up the cheese in my fridge.  I will miss it though!

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with lactose. Maybe you'll find that you can tolerate cheese even if you can't handle milk.

Just a thought... Heavy cream is just fat, so no lactose - - possibly butter and heavy whipping cream which don't have the lactose would still work?

I survived the MADS Christmas gathering at my house...just barely. Hubby and son wanted to know why they always bring so much dang food when they can only eat 3 bites. They did empty both kettles of mulled wine and apple cider with schnapps...and the coffee pot.  ;)

Don't count calories just protein to see that you're getting enough and carbs to make sure you aren't getting too many. Calories are for people on diets.  ;)

That is SO FUNNY, and kind of weird. It flies in the face of everything I've learned dieting over the last 10-15 years. this is already a strange journey, don't count calories, I've eaten until I've been satisfied (for the most part but difficult with liquids) and as of today, I'm down 21 pounds in 10 days (that does include the 15 pounds pounds I gained in surgery, but still...). clothes are fitting better and I haven't been running a single time, I haven't done any cardio or strength training... very weird!

what should my carbs be limited to on a daily basis? protein isn't a problem, I'm getting between 100-140g/day. should I have a minimum fat intake or limit there?

Many folks try for 50 to somewhere less than 100 gams carbs, some aim even lower than 50. It just depends on what you're comfortable with. I did a lot of Atkins during the 30+ years in the military, so low carb was pretty simple for me. Fat intake should be pretty high. If your body needs 30 grams and we DSrs malabsorb something around 80% of that, then something like 240 grams? I've never really counted fat grams--I just don't avoid fat in my diet. The amount of fat you system can tolerate is also a consideration. Newer folks may have less tolerance for fat than someone further out, so you have to go by what your body can handle well.
