It seems so easy... its scary...

Nearing 3 weeks post-op and other then one or two minor concerns everything has been going above and beyond what I expected...

As my last nutritionist appointment she seemed shocked I was getting ~40g of protein a days and 4-5 pints of liquids a day... She gave me the ok to eat purees, or any meats as long as i chewed it into a puree in my mouth...

Since then ive tried...

  • Different cheeses
  • Mashed potatoes/cauliflower
  • Turkey, ham, beef, kabasi
  • super thin crust pizza
  • Mc Donals cheese burger without the bun (tasty 13g of protien)
  • A hash brown...
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Spoon full of cupcake

So far nothing has made me sick or nauseous... Other then the major discomfort I get if I take to big a gulp of water or have one spoon full to much of food the surgery seems to have had little effect on me... Ive lost ~ 50 lbs since I started the pre-op process... My energy is up.. my heart rate is down... It seems I can eat more (not alot more) then 2-4 oz...

I here stories on here, and even from relatives months out, who have trouble eating the simplest of things... My life seems little changed... cut the bread and sugar... and eat 1/7 what i use to...

Am I just lucky? Or am I doing something wrong?... I feel like it cant be this simple...

wow, you are losing fast.  I am not loosing quite as fast as you are but I too have been really lucky in my recovery.  At 12 weeks out my biggest complaint are 2 stalls that lasted about a week each and a hemorrhoid that just won't go away.  Keep up the good work.

You'll experience some ebbs and flows as you get more adventurous.  Look at DSFacts.com to the eating pages and you'll get some great suggestions on high protein foods, and also my advice on preparing chicken breast that doesn't fill you up after two bites.

All in all though, once you get through recovery, it's pretty easy - especially in comparison of what others are dealing with after other procedures.

Yep, I had an easy recovery and like you I read plenty of horror stories so was pleasantly surprised.  I stick to mostly an Atkins style diet and that suits me fine.  I just lost the ability to eat baked beans today (gas), but I had issues with that beforehand and only got beans back for a short while he he.  Being a 2 step DSer I'm losing more slowly, but all in all I'm happy and BMs and gas aren't an issue so long as I don't eat junk!!

Just make sure you get on the Vitalady regime ASAP and then get your blood work done at 3 months out and tweak your vites accordingly and you should be fine!! mail  Vitalady does 90 day bundle of mostly chewable vites for DSers here https://vitalady.com/vitanews/starter-packages/

I did good and then something would happen and my stomach would be sensitive however I feel like I am being petty to even share but the main reason why I mention it is because it was resolved with nexium twice a day so if you have an issue try that it may help you as it did I.

Thanks for the reassurance everyone.

My doctor has me scheduled for blood work at the 3 month mark and has me on a standard supplement regiment till then.

I guess this surgery matches my vices perfectly (I am a fan of meat and cheese... ill miss pasta... but never needed sweets).

Most doctor's supplementation is woefully inadequate.  Please check what you're taking against Vitalady's recommendations, as you want to prevent your levels from dropping as that can be hard to recover from.

You will undoubtedly push too far at some point, and your body will let you know. That's the beauty of DS: your body will tell you what works and what doesn't.

Even at almost 2 years out, I still can over do it from time to time...but in order to really feel uncormfortable, I have to go on a real sugar binge...like10 plus pieces of Halloween candy.

At this point, I eat regular sized portions and can eat just about anything without gaining. Keep in mind that when I say regular sized portions, I am not talking about the portions I used to eat, I am talking about the type of portions that people should eat...not oversized portions.

Remember: protein and vitamins!

My unasked for advice is to stay far away from those carbs you are eating as soon as possible.  Once you are at goal weight  you can slowly add them back in.

At a little over 3 years out I can tell you that carbs are the devil and WILL make you gain weight.  I am on a crusade to loose one pants size by Christmas.  I am going to stay away from carbs as best I can.  I'll check back in around Christmas and let folks know how I did.

Congrats on everything else.

My recovery has been pretty easy so far.  I've had a couple of weeks where I didn't lost weight, and the culprits seemed to be fruit juice and salt; however, things quickly rectified.
