Four days Post-Op

I'm not sure where to start with this because I kinda feel like ranting but at the same time I need to count my blessings. I had surgery on 11/7 and I was scheduled for a DS. However, my surgeon felt it would be best to do my surgery in 2 parts. Because I was at a very high BMI and I had a very enlarged "fatty" liver, she opted to do my DS in 2 phases. After I drop 100 pounds or more, she will schedule me for the second stage. So I have the sleeve right now, which I was not prepared for.  I know it's the restrictive component of a DS.  I feel so lost because this is not the surgery I researched and educated myself about and jumped through hoops for and waited months to finally have. I know I will lose a lot of weight with the sleeve and I'm excited about that. Any amount of weight I lose will be awesome. But is it wrong of me to feel so disappointed?

I'm here and on the proboards reading up on whatever I can get my hands on. I'm having trouble getting in the required amount of water that they want me to drink (64 oz) and I'm getting burned out on chicken broth and SF jello. Plus side is I only have one more day of that and I see the doc and have a post-op education class on Tuesday where I'll get my first "real" food.

Any insight or kicks in the rear-end are welcome. Thank you all for listening.

I don't blame you a bit for being disappointed--it's not what you expected. : (  But you do have a DS in your future. There are plenty of 2-part DSrs around and they will help you. Do the best you can this year. Go low carb and lose the weight you need for the second part. In the mean time concentrate on fluids and then protein. It's a process but you can do it. (((hugs)))

Are you kidding?? I don't blame you AT ALL! I'd have been royally pissed. Disappointed is mild, esp since, as best I can tell from your post, she didn't discuss this possibility with you ahead of time. She knew what your bmi was. She knew, or should have known, that fatty liver was a distinct possibility at that bmi. She may have made a good judgement while she was in there, but this possibility was something she should have covered with you ahead of time. You would still have been disappointed, but probably not to the same extent.

Now, here's your requested kick in the read end - you did know that this surgeon, while a very experienced and qualified bariatric surgeon, has limited DS experience. We discussed this. A more experienced DS surgeon might have done the whole thing at once. Just sayin'.

For now, be happy with what you have, work on the water, and you will someday get your DS.

I'm sorry this has happened to you. But at least she didn't haul off and do RNY instead.

You are amazing to try to find the positive in this.  But like Larra said, at least you didn't end up with the RNY.

That sucks you have to have it in two parts... I weight a lot more then you and my doctor had no issue with doing it in one part... he acutely pushed for it..

PS: At least you only have 1 week for no food... im on liquid only for 3 weeks.

No excuses - no whining - just do it.  Try different flavors and temperatures.  Everything wet and decaf counts.  It's a lot of work right now, but this is your main job to benefit yourself.  Feeling dehydrated is horrible.
