Your body metabolizes the meds much faster than they were designed to break down, so most of it literally goes down the toilet before it can be effective.

Timed-release medications are designed to break down in little bits, as they travel through the 'normal' human intestine. Most 'normal' people have a small intestine of 6-7 meters. After the DS, those pills with only be traveling about half that distance.

Some do and some don't.  It depends on where in the body they are broken down and absorbed.  An informed Doctor can help you know.  So can some pharmacists, especially if you familiarize them with your surgery.

For example, I take an ADHD med called Vyvanse which is time released, but because of how and where it is released in the body, it works for me.
