It's hard to shake the old training about calories.

The Old Brain... I had to laugh! How True It Is!
To give everyone a laugh... I have some great guy friends who have been my friends for many years (seen me up and down weight wise). I was telling one of them I made this homemade nut mix. First words out of his mouth, Nuts have a lot of fat. I said, "Remember, I only absorb around 20% of fat". I know on the other end of the phone he's shaking his head! His brother had the RNY. It's very hard for him to grasp how I can eat so much but I'm losing weight. He said "It does not compute in my brain that you don't gain weight by eating fat"
I think even for those of us with the surgery, it is still that "old brain" at times...
Alright - stop looking at calories altogether. Look at protein first - then carbs (if you must-then consider if said carbs are complex or simple). It will drive you crazy - for protein rich foods are high in calories - you'll go batty.
Calories no longer exist!
