Are apples really a bad fruit to eat? Plus high protein low carb doesn't seem to be going well...
I've decided to try to stay on a high protein low carb diet until surgery because I want to lose some weight before surgery and get adapted to the eating post-op instead of being thrown into it like a month before surgery ive done 3 of my 6 months for the "supervised diet" which is required by my insurance. I bought some apples because I don't eat enough fruit and they came in a bag and were cheap lol. So I just ate one and I decided to track my food on the myfitnesspal app (it really is helping me) but then I seen that there are 130 calories and 25 grams of sugar in ONE apple... That sounds like a lot of sugar for a fruit to me. I mean so far I've 31 grams of the 70 grams of protein the myfitnesspal said I should get daily and apparently I've had 91 carbs and it says i should have 256 a day. 91 carbs sounds like a lot of carbs to me but I guess it isn't compared to what I used to eat. I mean honestly I haven't been that hungry today. Yeah head hunger has been bothering me but I haven't acted on it so far. I am not sure what to eat because I bought eggs, turkey and ham, apples, sausage, whole wheat tortillas, and bread. I feel like I am not doing very good with the whole protein part of this and I feel like I am eating too many carbs still. I am thinking about buying the ensure protein shake or the whey protein powder but I am not sure if that is a good idea. Lol advice would be good I don't want to fail post-op and I feel like I am already failing before I even have surgery. Myfitnesspal suggest I eat around 1800 calories a day but I am trying to stay around 1200. I think that 1800 is way to much. Anway thanks for all suggestions and advice
Peace and Love,
Alicia
I wish myfitnesspal had a way to program it for your nutritional goals--theirs stink. Yeah, apples have a lot of sugar and wheat anything is usually too high for me too and post-op gluten / wheat may not get along with your new system anyway. If you want fruit try blueberries or strawberries. There are a few low carb bakeries out there. One is Julian Bakery. They have a good low carb bread that's raisin cinnamon that I like pretty well. You might check out their website and see if any of your local markets carry it. Otherwise, relax and just get mentally prepared for your surgery; you don't have to be perfect at this, it's a journey. : )

I would suggest that you read a book about low carb lifestyles. Protein Power got me started and lots of people love South Beach. When you educate yourself on the the best kind of foods and ways to prepare them, you will really be ahead of the game for post-op. If you have never eaten low carb, you have a whole new world to learn - and a lot of it is counter-intuitive from low-cal dieting.
Most fruits DO have a lot of sugar, and there's really no reason you "need" fruit. Veggies are a better choice as far as nutrients per calorie.
The thing to stay away from is bread, unless it's a whole-grain bread. (This is not the same as whole wheat.) Even whole-grain breads should be eaten VERY moderately---again, we really don't "need" bread. We can live quite well eating nothing but protein and fat. (Not that that would be a lot of FUN, LOL!)
I agree with reading about high protein type diets like Atkins or a diabetic diet. Learn how to count carbs. It is *very* counterintuitive to what we learn when we diet (Weigh****chers, etc). Fruit is very high in sugar and I see it as a rare treat. In fact, now postop, it very often makes me sick! If you're really trying to do a postop type diet, I'd not worry about calories and just count carbs. When I was diabetic, I stuck with 30 grabs of carbs per meal, which translates to 2 carbs per meal. So a sandwich would be all the carbs you could have per meal or the insides of a sandwich with some sort of potato.
But mostly~~~ RELAX!! Preop success is not a prerequisite for postop success...I promise!!
Hi,
I will mostly second what everyone else is saying. Counting calories is not the way to go post-op. You have to count carbs and I have found they are everywhere. I have trouble staying away from them so that is a challenge for me. Just consider what you are doing now a learning phase. After surgery you want to start with your protein and gear every meal toward protein as much as you can.
I get my only fruit in yogurt now. I wish I could say the only bread I eat is low carb but that would be a lie... it is a work in progress though and I am trying!
Best of luck, Terri
Post-op, while you are losing weight anyway, you should consider fruit as junk food - something to be an occasional treat. It is nothing but sugar, it doesn't matter that it is a 'natural' sugar - your body can't tell the difference.

I have had apples in salad but usually don't eat all the bites. I love Pineapple, I eat two bites literally now. Fruit doesn't bother me. I'm lucky but at the same time, I wouldn't even say I've had 1/4 of an apple at a time. Like everyone says, count carbs and count protein forget about calories.
I consider Fruit in Bites 1 or 2 that's it. Blueberries about 2 tablespoons at a time for me.
Unless they are requiring you to diet like this, do something more reasonable as a pre-op.
In my post-op experience, head hunger didn't exist and I actually set an appt every couple of hours to get something to eat (no kidding) for 2 years. It's so different as a post op, so don't torture yourself needlessly trying to live as one prematurely. It's like describing the color purple to a blind man.
