I thought Mexico was for street tacos and reposada, not bariatric surgery

I would be interested to know why YOU went to Mexico for this surgery or are considering going there for the procedure. (I'm going to repost this on other fourm message boards too.)

I did not have my surgery in Mexico but there are some on this board who did. It was for cost I believe. If you have to self pay Mexico is a viable option for some and there is one very good surgeon who operates there.

My wife and I are considering Surgery for her and our Ins won't pay for it because her BMI is < 40 with no comorbidities. What do I need to consider, where are screenings done, what else should we be aware of?

I would review www.dsfacts.com where there is information about vetted DS surgeons. There is one in Mexico I believe which is recommended and people have had good experiences with.

Best of luck, Terri

I live in Canada and there are only 2 doctors that do the surgery here and it is very expensive.  Not covered by insurance and wait times here for most wls is crazy.  I went to Dr. Jamie Ponce de Leon in Tijauana, he works out of INT Hospital.  His co-ordinator Trish charges $8000. all inclusive except flights.  If you have facebook she is on there at WLS-for betterlife
Dr. Jamie Ponce de Leon - Medical guide Laurie Wolf Received money Never showed up - Only thing booked were flights.  Surgeon and Medical team, and hospital were awesome .  There is another Medical guide named Trish she is good.  PM me for info.

Despite what the above person has said, those of us who have been around for awhile would not recommend anyone other than Dr. Ungson or Dr. Aceves for the DS.

And you don't need to use any kind of "coordinator" or travel guide to set things up for you. the staff at these doc's offices will help you with everything and not charge any separate fee. Their business depends on medical tourists and they know the ropes.

While these 2 docs are very highly regarded, we have heard and seen horror stories with people who go to other surgeons in Mexico for the DS. You have to be very selective.

I had my DS done in August by Aceves & Ungson. It was the best healthcare experience I ever had. I only met Dr. Ungson briefly but Dr. Aceves came to my room twice a day the entire time I was in the hospital. Althogh I went for financial reasons and because it is so hard to even get a DS in Canada (only a couple of surgeons do them in a different province and the wait list is incredible) I would go to Mexico and have Dr. Aceves operate on me again in a heartbeat. I think who is doing your surgery is so much more important than where it is being done. Make sure you get a vetted surgeon and do your homework.

So, Dr. Ungson and Dr. Aceves are in business together? I found their names on separate web sites and contacted each of them separately. They both responded within in 48 hours so I'm pleased about that. I'll do some more research to find out a little bit more about their combined practice.

I actually just booked through Dr. Aceves. I had heard on this website that they do them together so I requested both since Dr. Aceves was not yet on the vetted list. My guess is that he must be pretty close to getting there if he isn't yet. I think you would be in good hands with either or both doctor.

Good luck

Some go to Spain, Belgium, and Brazil too.  It's not that uncommon to travel for surgery.  I had my surgery in the US but I went with my sister to Spain for hers and it was overall a great experience.

Perhaps once upon a time, healthcare was superior here.  It's not anymore.
