Hey guys I am just curious. How much weight did you lose before having surgery? What was your highest weight? Most importantly how did you get through that liquid diet?! I am in this mind set that I WANT and NEED to lose 10% of my body fat too avoid that dreaded liquid diet. My suregon's office says if patients lose 10% by the time of surgery they will "reward" them by letting them skip the two weeks liquid diet. I keep thinking in the back of my head lose 10% AND do the liquid diet. That way will defintely be able to minimize complications hopefully. Well I am also thinking heck lose more than 10% really work your butt off these last three months of waiting Ali maybe if you show everyone you are serious they will start seeing how great of a experience this will be for you. Okay I weigh 334.5 and I'm 20 as some may know. I know dang well I didn't get fat overnight and I know I didn't get fat by eating fruits vegetables and exercising 3 to 5 times weekly. I got fat by being lazy eating junk and not paying attention. So I am thinking if I got fat by doing everything wrong surfely I can lose weight by trying to follow my surgeons guidelines for my 6 month diet. Except i havent been following like I should so far. So these last three months I really need to kick my butt into gear. I would love to be down to like 280-290 the day of surgery but I will be happy with being down 300 lbs. I would just like to hear everyone's feedback and stories about losing weight preop and how hard or not hard it was. I love to eat of course and growing up in the country I love to eat home cookin especially biscuits mashed potatoes, gravy, and FRIED foods lol. Any feeback would be great! Thanks. Oh and my highest weight has been like 342? and my lowest since I got into the 300s was probably maybe 315 320.

Hi,

I think all surgeons are different. I had a RNY to DS conversion in March and was not required to lose any weight. I was 375 lbs for the surgery. When I had the RNY they wanted me to lose 25 lbs and I went from 450 to 425 before the RNY. I was never required to do a two week liquid diet. I have heard the reason for weight loss before surgery is to shrink the liver (I think) which makes it easier. My conversion surgery was an open procedure so I am thinking it did not matter so much.

Be gentle with yourself. Losing weight is hard. If it was easy and if we could do on our own we would have done it already and would not be considering surgery. I think the doctors just want to see some weight loss and that you are not gaining meaning eating everything in site before the surgery. Do what you can but don't beat yourself up and doing a liquid diet is ok. Lots have gotten through it. I once did a liquid fast for 8 months... lost lots of weight of course to gain it all back.

Best of luck with your surgery! Terri

Honestly, not a pound before my liquid diet. I basically maintained during my 6 month "diet." I just went through the motions of my monthly appointments. I lost 11 pounds during my liquid diet. (Starting weight- 297)

Do your best and know there will be moments that it sucks!!

My consult weight in May was 345.  I actually gained weight while I was waiting to have surgery.  (In all fairness...  I broke my ankle and was restricted from being on it too much).  My pre-op appointment weight was 353.  I did have to do the 2 week liquid diet.  The first 3-4 days are probably the worst.  During these days, your body is purging all the crap out of your system (excess water, carbs...).  This is also when you will see the most weight lost.  My body held onto everything.  I think I lost 10 pounds in the first week.  On the day of surgery when I was weighed, I was 337.  I lost 16 pounds pre-op.

However, my highest weight was 425 when I was sleeved in 2007.  I was 26 at the time.

Didn't have to do a liquid diet and didn't lose any weight preop before either the RNY or the revision to DS.  Different surgeons have different requirements, so keep on keeping on.  The DS is worth the price of a preop liquid diet. Never give up. You can do it.  Rah rah rah. :D

I went from 325 to 291 on the day of surgery and I decided on August 1 that I was going to get serious about losing some weight.  My surgeon required 15 lbs before being willing to schedule surgery.  That being said, I signed up for my fitness pal and entered Absolutely Everything that went into my mouth.  When you really decide that that's what you are going to do, and you put on the computer with pre-entered nutrition information everything that goes in, you really can find where the calories are sneaking in.

That being said, I struggle to lose weight.  I have PCOS and that doesn't help matters.

I also started walking and being more active.  I recorded that on my fitness pal as well.

My surgery was last week on October 15th and I was 291... Down 34 lbs from August 1!!!

i got weighed at the doctor yesterday.  My weight was 276 on October 24th!  9 days post surgery and 15 lbs down!!!

good luck with all of this process!

My highest weight as a pre-op was 405.  On surgery day, I was 397.  My doctor did not require a 2 week liquid diet, but 24 hours before surgery was definitely clear liquid prep, just like any other kind of surgery.

My surgical report lists my day of surgery weight as 361, but I know for a fact that is not correct.  I weighed myself at home before checking into the hospital, and wrote it down.  My next surgeon visit is in December, and I'm going to bring that up.

The benefits for me have been astounding.  High blood pressure and sleep apnea gone. I can sit in a chair and have room left over on each side.  Eyeballing clothes for size instead of having to try on everything. I have gone from a WW in shoes to a  C width, depending on how the shoe is made.

The best thing of all...I can eat like a normal person, well, maybe not as much at one sitting, but I am no longer afraid of gaining a lot of weight.

You're going to love your DS, and if you take care of it (make sure you get your vitamins and fluids in everyday), it will take care of you.

I lost 14 lbs without even trying.  I didn't have to do any pre-surgical diet at all.  My surgery was open, so there was no benefit to trying to reduce my liver beforehand.

I didn't have to do a pre-op diet, but I did quit my Coke Classic cold-turkey the day I had my consult and got a surgery date. I lost 12 pounds in the 6 weeks or so between then and surgery, but not because I was "on a diet"---all I did was cut out the Cokes.

The best thing you can do, so far as getting your body ready to heal after surgery, is to eat lots of protein and as few carbs as possible. Start taking your vitamins now, and get in the habit of drinking LOTS of water.
