DS w/ Dr. Schauer @ Cleve Clinic

Haven't posted in a while, just lurked. Quickly, I want to revise as I have gained most of weight back from sleeve. I have been going back and forth b/t RNY vs. DS for a multitude of reasons. The other day, I prayed on it and saw here that someone had a DS done by Dr. Schauer who is my preferred surgeon. I called his office and they confirmed he is doing the surgery. Obviously, with a sleeve and a dependence on NSAIDs the DS makes the most sense. I was leaning towards RNY b/c I don't have (at least I feel like I don't have) any restriction and the fact that I am at the Clinic for all of my specialists. I have been with the clinic for over 10 years, Dr. Chand did my sister's RNY and she is doing beautifully.  Dr. Schauer is a fantastic surgeon with excellent credentials. Plus, I'd be 30 minutes from home as opposed to when I went to freaking Mexico for the sleeve. (Dr. Alvarez is awesome, no complaints about him)
Anyways, long winded story short, I'd love to hear from Dr. Schauer's patients or anyone who has any input about him. Also ,I'd love to hear from anyone who has the DS several years after the sleeve.

I've had most of my preliminary paperwork done for the clinic since March of this year. I'm waiting on a callback from the office to schedule a consult with Dr. Schauer. At the very least, I hope he can do some follow up on the status of my sleeve. One of the drawbacks of going to Mexico for the VSG is that I have had zero follow up sans blood work. I really want to know if my capacity issues are in my head or my tummy or a combo of both.

 Interesting!  Dr. Schauer has an excellent reputation and I've read several of his papers over the years.  But I've never heard of him as a DS surgeon, as a matter of fact, I always thought he was anti-DS.  I wonder if he has changed his opinion?

I don't remember any of his DS patients posting but I could very well be wrong.  Wouldn't be the first or the last time.

Until very recently, no one at the Cleveland Clinic did the DS, but, again recently, I've seen a couple posts about Dr. Schauer and the DS so hopefully he is doing them now. 
    I hope, when you see him and get a definite confirmation from him that he does the DS, you will let us know, as this could be valuable information for other people.

As far as your sleeve goes, he will probably want/need to do some assessment of its current size to determine whether or not you need a re-sleeve along with the "switch" part of the DS. And if you happen to have your operative note from the sleeve, that would be helpful, even if it's in Spani**** can always be translated.

If you are dependent on NSAIDs, the DS is far and away your best choice, because (and I'm sure you know this) with RNY, they are contraindicated for the rest of your life.

The Cleveland Clinic in general has a great reputation!

I heard many years ago that Dr. Schauer did the ds in Pittsburgh, Pa. It would be great if he is now doing it in Cleveland.

Good to see you posting again!!!  You gotta do what's best for you!  I felt for a while that I had very little restriction with my sleeve.  But I tell you...  after that 3 week liquid diet, I've got crazy restriction all over again. 

Hopefully they get something scheduled for you soon.  Keep us posted!!!!!!

 I am previous patient of Dr Schauer and Dr Chand. I had my DS surgery done in Michigan, I'm actually from Canada, and I ended up with some serious complications. About a year into my complications I was sent to the Cleveland clinic as a last resort to try and get me healthy again. Both of them were great surgeons although neither were doing DS at the time so he is new at this surgery. I can say thanks to those two I am healthy and complication free. The way I look a they saved my life and all vetted DS surgeons had to start somewhere and he does have an amazing rep as a bariatric surgeon. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
