How long does hair loss go on
DS on 06/14/12
I am just wondering how long this hair loss stage goes on. I am about 4 months out from surgery and am loosing quite a lot of hair. This has been going on for about 2 weeks now. All my blood work shows that my levels are normal except my red blood cell count was low. I am hopeing this will slow down soon if my nutrient levels stay good.
Mine went on for a little over 3 months. YMMV

I never lost any hair. I'll be 4 years out in February.
It just depends on the individual whether or not you lose hair. Some do and some don't. In my support group, there are only four people showing any signs of hair loss.
It doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong so early out. Some people's systems respond to the shock of such a big surgery that way.
Fluids first, protein next, vites last is what I was told to do early out. It seemed to take forever for me to get a schedule that would work, but you will. There are vitamin gurus here, and Vitalady is a good source of information on which vites and minerals to take together. I actually found Cal/Mag/D powder to mix with juice (not acidic) to get my calcium in, and those three work together to get the calcium to the bones, where it needs to be.
The two rules told to me by my doc were Vitamin C and Iron together to help absoprtion, and calcium by itself, because it is so dense, it can block absorption of anything you take with it.
Most times, you have to work up to getting all your vites in, Try liquid multis and calcium for your first two months, then switch to the capsules and tablets. I would suggest learning to give yourself B 12 shots. I did, and that works much better for me than sublinguals in keeping my levels up. B-1 (Thiamine) is a small pill, but I still cut all my pills, The stomach acid can get to the active ingredients (vites and calcium) and dissolve them better. My doctor prescribed Creon for me, and I still take it with meals and with vites. It's like a partial chemical reversal, but your doctor will let you know if you need it or not.
So...Multivites, Calcium, B1 and B12 are the four most important to get in early out. Again, remember you've probably only got about 3 oz capacity in your new stomach/sleeve this early out. Don't worry, it is designed to stretch, because we DSer's need more to compensate for the higher malabsorption of our surgeries. My program gave a progressively increased nutrition plan, so by the end of the one year matruation process, your stomach/sleeve will be able to hold about 8 oz at a sitting...a good sized salad plate meal by the end of your first year!
Don't be afraid to eat...your DS will work for you and with you!
Good luck, and God Bless!

Hi,
I lost a lot of hair and it went on that way for about 3 months. It got very thin and I was worried. It has slowed down now but I still am losing more hair than normal. My surgery was in March 2012 so from 3 - 6 months. I am told that by my 9 month appointment I should start seeing new little hairs growing in. No sign of that yet. I am on Biotin from Vitalady and I think that has helped.
Best of luck, Terri

Thanks ladies, I learned alot on this thread. @ jazzyone thanks for info, I have been giving myself B12 injections for years, I haven't been able to absorb it well since in my early 20's. Well at least I have an idea how long it will last. When I brushed it after my shower today, it didn't seem as bad. Again Thanks, Barb
Biotin will appear in your labs as high Vitamin B, FYI, so don't freak out.
I mixed Knox unflavored gelatin packets in all my food and drink for hair regrowth. Bosley products gave me a rash, so did all the Argon (?) products. If you do decide to use those products, be aware that Rogaine and all the others are temporary fixes. When you stop using them, the regrown hair usually falls back out. And don't get it anywhere else on your body: Don't shampoo in the shower and let it run down your body, for example.
Biotin, Knox gelatin, PROTEIN (120 grams a day, consistently), and lots of water.
Not enough protein will ALWAYS cause my hair to fall out.
