This surgery is about one thing, Protein!
If you start eating "whites - sugar, flour, cakes and pastas"... You can have a weight gain more than just a bounce back. You have to always keep the carbs in check the rest of your life. Can you enjoy a piece of cake for your birthday? Sure, but not monthly, daily or weekly.
I am more consumed with food than ever before now. You have to get in the Protein! The diet is difficult if you are not a meat eater. Pork still makes me sick to this day. I can tolerate Bacon very well.
The Vets can tell you more than I about this... As I am a newbie!
This I know. Carbs are not our friend! Our only real friend with this surgery is Protein!

well, to be honest all suregeries you can gain all your weight back. wls is never a 'fix all' or 'an easy way out'. total opposite! its work, dedication, and knowledge to keep up with your new insides.
if you stick to your required 'diet' so to speak the ds works! its the best tool out there and if you use it correctly it will always work. to conquer your weight you have to mentaly change as well.
i bet your nervous and excited your surgery is just around the corner.

As the others have said, regain is possible with all surgery types especially if you make poor choices with your food.
That said, I know of people who gain back some of their weight but I've not (to my knowledge) met anybody who gained back ALL or more than all of their weight back (unlike most of the other surgeries).
It's also easier to "diet" post-DS so you can get it off if you eat the right way again. As a female there will always be challenges with hormones and life changes that can make it a challenge but it's not a one-shot deal.

As I am 5 yrs post op and involved with many whom have had the DS - I know of no one who has gained all their weight back that they lost post surgery. I do know some whom have gained 10 - 20 lbs.
Personally, The DS offeres the best long term wieght loss with the lest amount of regain.
Highest Weight 350 surgery weight 330 Current weight 152 .
I have gone up and down 15 lbs

I have heard of people several years out gaining up to 50 lbs back but 30-40 seemed more common if there was regain. I haven't heard of anyone gaining all or most of their weight back but maybe no one is eager to share that info. I am pretty sure they all admitted that they needed to reign in their eating and get back to exercise. It wasn't gained innocently or for no reason.
I'm a little over 3.5 years out, and I have to struggle to keep my weight from going lower than my PCP's imposed 160 pre plastics. I don't know any DSer's whove gained a significant amount of weight back, and from what I'm experienceing now, I don't anticipate having to deal with that issue...it's the exact opposite for me!
I have an estimated 15 -20 pounds of loose skin and adhescient fat deposits (can you say turkey wattle thighs?) and am working like heck to get it removed. the skin has caused subcutaneous fat infections, called cellulitis, from garment friction causing tiny breaks in my skin, letting in the everyday bacteria all of us have on our skin. As innocuous as it may seem, cellulitis can be deadly. If the antibiotics don't check it in time, you can go into sepsis very quickly. My last bout seemed to be a bit resistant to the usual antibiotic used before, so I had to use two *different* antibiotics to knock it completely out this time.
Cellulitis is usually a problem for SMO people, but I never had problems with cellulitis until I lost the weight, and started wearing compression garments to hold the skin in place.

While not perfect, statistically the DS provides the best statistics as far as weight re-gain.
RNY to DS 210 lbs gone for 5 years.
