check out DS Facts for a comparison of the surgeries and a lot more great info on the DS.

t
do you research and consider the surgeries based on your specifics.  For me, there really was no choice.  The restriction and malabsorbtion of the DS was a perfect solution for me.

i am not familiar with Dr. Spaw, but I see he is on the DSFacts list of vetted surgeons

I had my DS with a different Nashville surgeon.  I have a friend who had her's done by Dr. Spaw and she has nothing but good things to say about Dr. Spaw.

Some will disagree with me, but even though the DS has significantly more malabsorption, it seemed the easiest to live with.  Both require vitamins, both can cause horrendous gas if one eats fartogenic foods.  Yet I have severe arthritis and I would not be able to take pain meds with the by-pass.  I also don't eat at the same time every day so restricting fluid intake before eating would be difficult.  Also not everyone who has the by-pass dumps.  From what I've heard about dumping, it's something I'd rather not experience and I was sure I'd be in the group that does dump.  I'm not a big sugar eater, but I can't imagine never being able to indulge every now and then.

Do extensive research and decide on the best surgery for YOU..After all you're the one who will be living with the results for the rest of your life.

Best wishes in your journey.

I'd take the DS again and again.  I found post op living to be easy to adjust to, and am still loving life some 7 yrs post op.

I was scheduled for the RNY but switched surgeons so I could get the DS...

Why *I* chose it:
Highest rate of remission of diabetes (type 2 and WAS on an insulin pump)
Ability to eat the same way I had eaten for the last 10 years (Protein/fat mostly, Atkins style)
My need to be able to take NSAIDS
My "NEED" to be able to drink while I eat.

Why I believe it's the best:
I 'm a believer in science. I researched the science and read the scientific literature and this is what I believe about the DS:

It has the best statistics for percent of excess weight loss.
It has the best statistics for maintenance of weight loss over time.
It has the best statistics for causing remission of type 2 diabetes.

All surgeries are not created equal. The DS is the "strongest" surgery available.

I am a light weight with less than 100 lbs to loose. But for people with a high BMI the DS is an even better choice.

One reason I did not go to any of the Nashville surgeons, either they were not in my network or they did not do the DS on a lightweight. And since I HAD to go to a network doctor and a COE to even get WLS, I had to find one who was in all three camps (IN network, at a COE, and did lightweights). But I have heard excellent reports of their work.

I second SouthernLady for the same reasons...

Make sure that this is a lifestyle *you* can handle.

On the downside, I'm dealing with several deficiencies now, but they are entirely *my* fault.  I didn't take very good care of myself six months ago, due to a significant life event.   I will know exactly where my levels are when I see my hematologist Next Friday.  I asked for copies of my blood tests. but I may have to order them again.

I'm still pounding back the heavy-duty vites and minerals TFN!

Southernlady listed the majority of the same reasons why i am going to have my DS surgery Nov 14! I had the band and to be honest, it was not the best choice for me and I have had nothing but issues with it since. Whatever choice you make, it has to be your own. You know your body and eating/exercising habits the best so pick what's right for you....best of luck to you on your journey!

We are at the hospital right now under Dr. Spaw's care.  He did my husband, Dave's, DS on Monday.  We have been very pleased with him.  He is knowledgeable, kind, personable, and cautious.  I believe Dr. Spaw has been doing the DS for about ten years and is a renowned laparoscopic surgeon.  Dave's procedure was non even hand assisted, it was completely lap.  I'd recommend Dr. Spaw.  I saw him initially seven years ago about my DS, but his partner at the time ended up doing my surgery.

Lots of people gave some excellent input on why they chose the DS.    Let me make it simple for you.   I work with three other people who have had weight loss surgery.   Two had the RNY, two of us have had the DS.   All of us had our surgeries from 5-7 years ago.   The RNY'ers have both gained most of their weight back.  The DS'ers?   We're looking mighty fine.
