can a non meat eater get a DS

I really don't like to eat alot of meat or meat products. I eat a hamburger maybe once every two weeks. But No other meat or fowl. Never bacon,  no butter, eggs maybe once every two weeks, chicken maybe once every two three months. No nuts. Not for any dietary reasons just because I don't like to. I do like sunflower seeds, peanut butter and fish. So, does this lack of meats or fats make me a poor candidate for the DS ?

It's probably not a good idea. We malabsorb quite a lot of the nutrients we eat so we have to make sure we eat enough and/or supplement with good quality protein shakes plus take a lot of vitamins and minerals. If you were to continue as you are now you'd likely be malnourished with a DS or RNY.

I should have said that I have had an RNY and I am looking into a DS revision. I ate the no meats before the RNY and after I still don't eat them. I do get in my protien with cheese, nuts, Peanutbutter, and protien shakes. I do the supplements already now. Basically I don't have much fat in my diet as it is.

If you're drinking protein shakes and eating some eggs, cheese, nuts and fish, you may be fine but really watch the labs.

I wasn't a big fan of meat before my DS.  I could have easily been categorized as a vegetarian.  Except I love dairy.  I rely on protein in my coffee in the AM (Champion Whey Stack chocolate) for my morning 30 grams.  I then eat a Greek yogurt at work for another 20.  Lunch is across the street at the Grill, the breakfast special.  Here's where I am surprising myself today:  I eat pork sausage and over-easy eggs with cheese on top.  That's another 20 at least protein.  I snack throughout the day on nuts, swiss cheese, american cheese, string cheese, beef jerky, peanut butter, and seeds and nuts.  By the time I head for home, I'm full of about 90-120 grams of protein.  I then take a nap and wake up in time to eat supper with my husband, another 15-20 grams of protein.  If I am not hungry at night, I top off the day with another protein decaf coffee before bed, since the whey protein isolate is best absorbed at night, when our digestion slows down slightly.

I think it's entirely possible to do the DS on dairy products alone.  WITH ONE EXCEPTION:  You should be aware that alot of us are LACTOSE INTOLERANT post-DS.  I was for about 6 months.  During that time, I could only consume whey protein ISOLATE.  I had to read labels religiously to avoid getting sick.  The main symptom of lactose intolerance post-DS is diarrhea.  Not to be confused with frequent loose poo.  That's different.  I'm talking explosive, water-faucet diarrhea that dehydrates.  It has to be treated or you will end up in the ER getting fluids due to dehydration.

You might be like me, and turn out to LOVE bacon post-op.  I always loved the smell of it before, but now I can't get enough sausage, bacon and cured meats.

your description of Lactose Intolerance is too funny and spot on. I too am Lactose Intolerant so I only drink soy milk which only has 6g per cup. I still at 4 years out have trouble getting my protien in each day. I hate yogurt. I am okay with eggs just don't desire them often so maybe that will change, I do love cheese so thats good.

Now tell me about the loose stools. Is it common?

Is the reason for all the Meat eating to get in your protien or Fats?

Meat is an easy way to stay low carb. Carbs are evil and you, and people around you, will pay if you eat carbs...at least that what happens to me.

We stick with meat cause it's an easy way to get protein. Fat is almost a free food for a DS'er and if we do not eat enough, we can get constipated in a heartbeat. Carbs cause most of us bloat/gas...as in paint peeling gas.

I get my fat by using real butter (in almost everything), cream, full fat sour cream, cheese, and as a good Southerner...I use bacon grease in my veggies.

I do know there are some DS surgeons that will not even do a DS on a vegetarian.

Some of us DSers are constipated.  Like me.  I gather from posting on this site and the other forums that I am NOT in the minority, either.  The calcium for me causes the constipation.  I have never suffered from the loose poos that others post about.

As far as carbs causing gas, I feel the need to clarify.  CARBS as I understand them refer to sugar and flour.  The "white" foods.  Bread and pasta, foods made with refined white flour give me problems.  I avoid them.  First they bloat me.  At 120 pounds, that makes me look pregnant, which is not attractive on a 52 year old woman.  Then the "other" problem will start.  I can plan ahead so I am home alone when I need to pass gas.  I don't like to, so I avoid flour.  Sugar, on the other hand, makes me dizzy now.  I avoid large amounts of sugar.  I cannot eat more than two cookies or I get dizzy.  That's NOT DUMPING, mind you.  So carbs, as I understand them, are sugar AND flour, or the white foods.

I am feeling like you are not a really good candidate for the Duodenal Switch if you are being honest and saying now that you cannot get in your protein as a RNY patient.  If you are noncompliant right now, you're going to kill yourself as a DSer.  Not "liking" protein foods like yogurt and the like really isn't the perfect recipe for a future DSer.

You need to do some serious research as a Lactose Intolerant RNY currently.  I do not recommend you as a DS candidate.  Please don't get the DS.  And it's not just the vegetarianism.  It's the whole non-compliance thing.

I.  am.  not.  a.  doctor.
