On line? how is travel arranged and your post op stay, How much is added to the overall cost of surgery, with travel, lodgings etc.costs? Who does your follow up care post op if I do not have a PCP who will f/u on vits and protein labs?? Thanks to all. Maja
I started my revision with a surgeon locally in FL as a lapband over my RNY and realized after much research and talking to Dr.K that my best bet was the DS. I spoke with him over the phone and because I had alot of the pre-testing done already for the other surgeon I just had it released to Dr.K. However - Dr.K will send you the scripts for the required clearances/tests and you can do them locally and have the results sent directly to him. (Have them send you a copy as well!).
I did not have any classes I needed to take. Dr.K requires a "class" that I did 4 days before my surgery so I knew what I was getting myself into - he sits down with you and goes over the procedure as well as other procedures, talks about supplementation and personal responsibility.
I went in for pre-ops at Verdugo Hospital in Glendale CA. He also does surgeries in Delano but that is not where I went. Verdugo is AMAZING and the nursing staff is AWESOME!! I even bought my favorite nurses presents before I left - that is how good they were!
You MUST bring a caregiver with you and if you live out of state he expects you to stay at least in town locally for 7-10 days in case of any complications. I had none, thankfully but I really wouldn't have been in the physical mood to travel even if I left early.
I stayed at the Best Western in Eagle Rock. They gave me an awesome rate since I stayed for 17 days (mom and I went a few days early for pre-op and we spent a few days traveling to the ocean) and then I stayed almost 2 weeks after surgery. THe hotel was great, they had a microwave, fridge, good size bathroom and there is a mall with a Target within walking distance and a Krogers down the street for groceries. The hospital was only about 5-10 mins away and easy to get to.
Total additional costs - 3 airline tickets (I bought 2 seats for myself because I wanted to be comfortable), 17 days hotel, rental car for 17 days, food for my mom I would say my extras were about $3k.
My follow up care is done by Dr.K. I simply email him that I need a script for labs, he emails to me, I print and take to Quest Diagnostics, he gets the results within 2 weeks and emails me the results and his reccommendations. Of course, he would love to see you personally but I can't afford to go out there every year. So this is the best I can do. If you ever have any questions, he will answer them at all hours and is perfectly honest and open.
I'm sure you have more questions, feel free to email me directly kjfras at aol. (Won't allow me to type my email here).
