QUESTION FOR DSERS MANY, MANY, YEARS OUT!
I am six plus years out. I had about a ten pound rebound, but I don't worry about it. I needed it. My face and upper body were too thin. I have remained the same weight for three years now.

My surgeon said a higher percentage of weightloss is maintained with the DS even over the RNY. Those were my two options for a revision and she said since my weight has been a yo-yo over the years, she would recommend the DS because it will be the best to help maintain it. I guess at the 4-5 year mark with RNY the malabsorbtion factor goes away quite a bit. With DS it lessens but is always there to a degree.
RNYrs will always malabsorb certain vitamins, minerals, and a little bit of fat, but for most any significant malabsorption of calories is pretty much gone by 18-24 months post-op. There's so very little bypassed in the average RNY that the body has very little trouble overcoming it.
With the DS, nearly 60% of the small intestine is bypassed, and 'normal' absorption only occurs in the last 100-150 cms of the small intestine. The body simply can't grow enough more villi to overcome this, and we'll always malabsorb quite a bit.

Hi Dee, I'm nearly 5 years out and I stay within 7lbs of my lowest weight. I try and stay low carb and it keeps me right around 138lbs and I'm 5ft6 and a size 4.

Had a band in 2005 at 280lbs, had band removed and DS done on Jan 22nd 08 at 220lbs in Spain, now 135lbs and a size 4!! Happy as a Clam!!Dontcha love the DS? It's the best tool around!!
Dee,
I am speeding toward 10 years post op (where does the time go???) and am at my highest weight at the moment - about 15 lbs over my lowest. I have spent the last year constantly being on the road for work and am dealing with the 'F' years hormonal issues as well and my weight bumped up a bit. All in all, it could be much worse. The last time I was on the road for business this much (it was pre-op), I put on 70 lbs!
The great thing about the DS is that I know I can take some of this off just by getting back to basics - getting in ALL my vitamins, increasing protein, protein first, cut out some of the carbs, drink lots of water and exercise.
I noticed a change in my absorption at about 5 years out. There have been gradual changes since then as well. I have to work harder to not gain weight, but it is no where near it was pre-op.
Best wishes,
Sharon
