You eat meat protein when you take your iron but drinking a protein shake mixed with some form of milk is not going to help your system absorb the iron.

As long as there's no calcium involved, you should be okay.  Read your labels

The iron in meat is heme iron.  Not much is known about how this type of iron is absorbed.  For instance, if you swallow dessicated calves liver capsules, your iron goes up.  There is no iron in them, but there you have it.

Carbonyl iron, heme iron and ferrous sulfate are mainly absorbed in the gastric tissues (stomach) and the duodenum.  Hence the DSers who eventually end up needing to undergo iron infusions.  WATCH YOUR IRON.  WATCH YOUR FERRITIN.  Your ferritin is your iron "savings" account.

Protein has no effect on heme iron absorption.  Google and do your research.

Iron cannot be absorbed when taken with any type of calcium.  Some sources will tell you that you can take Proferrin with calcium.  While that might even be true, WHY would you even want to take a chance at wasting such an expensive vitamin?  $60 per bottle for Proferrin and then you just take with calcium?  That's just producing very expensive poop, in my opinion.

An excellent site to research iron is:  http://www.irondisorders.org/symptoms/
