Hi everyone,

I am new to this site, but I am glad i found it! I am having my DS on 10-1-12 in Grand Rapids Mi, being preformed by Dr. Paul Kemmeter MD at St.Marys hospital.   All I can say about this whole process is wow, by that I mean I had my first consultation with Dr. D White, and Dr Kemmeter on  Aug 18th. They talked with me set me up for a bunch of lab work, ekg, ultra sound, Haida scan, and a EDG all done that next week. On Aug 30th (my birthday) I get a phone call from from Netti his surgical coordinator saying that my BCBS PPO for health care providers of Mi .
I was approved and that they had a cancellation and if I wanted i could have the surgery in two and a half weeks.  I couldn't have it done then unfortunately, I work in a lab in a small hospital, and we due to have our bi annul lab inspection my boss couldn't approve a LOA for this time. So i got the first surgery date available and that was November 1st.  Wow this is happening rather fast, i was expecting to have to wait like i have heard from others that have had wls.  I am trying to find local support groups in the area that I can attend. Well finding them is very easy, finding a few that fit into my work schedule not so easy. I did find one that would work out with my schedule, but I can't attend because I am not having surgery with the hospital or practice that sponsors this group. I find that just pain dumb, but oh well. I am very excited, and very nervous at the same time. I have been having problems with a few friends and co works over this. They keep expressing their opinion on how this is the easy way out. OK.. I don't get that at all.. yes from the date i started this process to getting scheduled was rather easy, but for all I have been through trying to loose weight, and the sleepless nights I had when i was thinking about surgery.  Has anyone else had issues with others trying to bring them down with negative opinions? I am sorry for length of this, i just wanted to give a little background on my personal journey into the DS. I also would like to chat with other wls pre/post op patients. Maybe give, and get a little advice, make new friends from all over as we share a common bond..

Hi and welcome. I'm glad your journey is starting out smooth. I also am having the DS with Dr Kemmeter I had a phone consult with him back in Aug I really liked him and thought he was down to earth, but I'm still waiting. My paperwork finally went into the insurance over a week ago but nothing yet. Best of luck with your journey!

Welcome PBT.TECH!  I'm kind of a newbie here too.  Had the sleeve nearly two years ago and am looking at a revision and converting to the DS.  The gals on this DS forum are great sounding boards and have wonderful advice.  My only advice is to keep looking for a support gorup.  I noticed that makes a huge difference.  It almost makes you accountable to the people in the group.  I actually met one of my best friends at my WLS support group.  Good luck on your journey!

Ik1970,
I saw your photos in your post and thought "she looks like a reporter".  Then I clicked on your profile.....and you are?!?!  Ha!  It's amazing what having been in "the business" makes you notice.  You look great!

That's funny.  I saw the tv set in your pics and assumed.  You could be!  Right now I have a body for radio.    And can't wait to change that.

I get really annoyed when people assume, and feel very free to inform us, that we have "taken the easy way out". What a pile of crap! There is nothing easy about having wls. We put our lives on the line to regain our health and quality of life, and that's after struggling to lose weight without medical intervention for years.
And that's what this is - medical care. It isn't easy, it isn't cosmetic, and there is no other effective treatment for people who are MO.

Ignore those comments as best you can, and remember that you are not obligated to discuss your health care decisions with anyone. Even if they are nosy and ask. It's entirely up to you. There will be people who care about you and understand and support you. There will be others who will be resentful or jealous, and you will lose these people from your life along the way. You can't change others, you can only control your response to them.
