Vega Shakes

I know the dietician said if I use these, I have to cut the protein (it's vegan) in half.  Watch my carbs for the day.  When I use just one a day, I feel a lot better.  I think it's because of the vitamins in them are being processed in my body.

Anyone have any ideas or have tried them?

Am I reading it right that one shake would have 19 grams of carbs? If that's true, you wouldn't have to cut the protein in half but definitely watch the carbs on those days you have this. I think she means you will only aborb half the protein and it only has 15 grams of protein. Is that worth the 19 carbs?

But if we only absorb half the protein don't we only absorb half the carbs to?

Depends on the carb...

Complex carbs (green veggies, etc) yeap about half. Simple carbs (read sugar type here), nope, we absorb 100%

Absorption doesn't work that way. Different substances (proteins, carbs, fat) are absorbed differently.

Bottom line - with the DS, we absorb about 40-60% of the proteins we consume, only about 20% of the fat we consume, and about 100% of the simple carbs we consume.

Because of this, we need plenty of protein and we need to limit carbs, esp simple carbs. This also means we can eat fat freely. Nutritionists who are used to thinking in terms of gastric bypass and/or lap band totally do not understand this, and many patient are given incorrect information by well meaning but poorly informed nutritionists.

That's a lot of carbs for the amount of protein. I wouldn't use them.

Why do you think the vitamins in this shake are being processed any faster or better than the vitamins you're taking in pill form? I think you're experiencing a placebo effect, and maybe a carb rush.

Not a great choice. You would do better to have something high in protein and low in carbs. Esp as a still new post-op, you need to use your stomach space for protein. This is your priority.

I used the Adkins shakes. Cheapest place for them is Walmart. They have 15 gm of protein but very low carb. The fat content is high but that's ok - remember, you had the DS, and you will absorb very little of the fat. And it makes them taste pretty good and go down easy.

There is no reason with the DS that you would want to cut protein in half. Your body needs protein! Keep your carbs low to keep the weight loss going strong, but get in lots of protein to maintain your health.
