Liquid iron supplements: thoughts pls

My PCP has prescribed me Fersamal 140mg/5ml syrup made by Goldshield (yes it has sugar in it). Dosage 1 x 5ml spoonful twice a day. As usual don't have with caffeine, eggs or dairy applies (bedtime and middle of the night doses here we come).

The Vitalady tender iron was constipating me and causing me bad cramps.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or insights folk have into this. TIA

Last week I started a liquid iron, ferrous sulfate (220mg/5ML) and I take 7.4 ML a day. I'm borderline anemic and my hematologist has had good results with this liquid and his bariatric patients. I'm feeling pretty hopeful about it. It does give a little constipation but nothing like tablets did. Mostly for me, I don't have as urgent a need to go in the morning but then need to in the afternoon (24 hours later) so I'm considering adjusting when I take it to coincide with when I *want* to go. :)

I think the tast is fine, just like I've been sucking on coins or something! Hah! The hardest for me is that it says it is best on an empty stomach and that is tricky for me. I'm never sure how long to wait after eating or before.

I'm a week into it though and have had no ill effects. It's an adjustment to take it since it's not a pill and easily stuck in my pill box but .. I'm just happy to try something to get my ferritin up. I'll do 3 months and then see how the labs look.

I don't know many (or any) others doing liquid iron .. I think most people just opt for infusions and pills. For me, the pills weren't working for me so I needed something that was a little different.

Mine says food is fine (it may help relieve any stomach-related side effects) but that you have to take it away from caffeine (not an issue for me) and eggs and dairy (an issue).

I get up at least once to use the bathroom at night so will take a dose then. I have a syringe and will pre-load it before I go to bed so I can take it in the dark.

I have to take mine twice a day, so maybe I'll have a dose upon waking as my PCP said they don't have to be 12 hours apart.

Ferrous sulfate? Are you sure? That's supposed to be one of the hardest ones for us to absorb. Heme, carbonyl, polysaccharides, ferrous fumerate-- but sulfate is a salt that usually binds malabsorbers up tighter than a tick.

Am I sure of what--that my bottle says ferrous sulfate or that I'm not completely constipated? :)

If I have no positive results after 3 months then we'll discuss other options.

That it's sulfate?  I guess we'll see if you absorb it. Very interesting.  What else is in it?

I guess the other question would be for RNYrs. I see them discussing iron and they say they can't absorb ferrous sufate worth a dang and if they also dump on sugar, why would he use this stuff? Just more questions...

My ferrous fumerate tasted OK and weirdly I lost a pound after my first night of taking it (I think that more to do with the copious amounts of heavy cream I had the previous day).

Livestrong confirms that it is the most absorbable form so it's one to consider if you don't do well with yours.
