How do you know when you're "healed"?

I'm 8 weeks out today.  I was told at my appointment 2 1/2 weeks after my surgery that I had no food restrictions other than protein and keep it healthy.  Most days I do, some days I don't eat/drink enough.

My incisions are still red and puffy.  My long incision is still a little sore and scabby.  My abdomen still feels bloated and kind of...hard?  when I press on it, both above and below my bellybutton.

Am I still in a "healing" phase or am I over it?  I know it's a silly question, but I'm concerned because I keep gaining and losing the same 2-3 pounds and starting to get really frustrated.

Thanks all!

I'm five weeks out and I don't have any redness or puffyness around any of my incisions (I had mine done lap). All I have left are some dried scabs. My abdomen feels totally normal. The only time it feels bloated or sore is when I eat dairy or too many simple carbs (I have become somewhat lactose intolerant since the surgery). Other than that I don't feel as though I had surgery at all except tiring out easily.

I'm lucky that I've had a really smooth recovery. I'm not sure if my experiences are typical, but I thought I would share.

I am at 6.5 weeks out.I had mine lap.  I no longer have the poofing of my abdomen.  I have 2 incisions which are being really slow to heal but the others are scars now.

A big part of healing is getting to the point where you CAN eat and drink.  And not doing enough of either can inhibit weight loss and lead to problems down the road.  Are you tracking?  Do you KNOW how much protein you are getting?  Are you taking all your vites successfully?  If you don't eat enough, are you doing a shake of some kind?

How is your energy level?  Are you walking or doing something for exercise?

If you don't think your incision is healing properly, go get it checked out.  Especially if it feels hot or you are running a temperature.

At 8 weeks post, my incision was still red and I didn't feel all the way 'normal'.  But I was close.  I was eating and drinking enough and walking about 5 miles a day.  I didn't go for a land speed record or anything like that.  I just walked at that point.  I was taking all my vitamins and I was back to work full time.  I was still very careful about lifting.

I try to keep track of what I'm eating, but some days, work is just too busy and it doesn't happen.  I know I'm not getting nearly enough.  I don't like eating, nothing tastes good, and I just don't want to do it.  I try, don't get me wrong.  I am taking vitamins every day, so at least I'm doing that part correctly.  I try to do shakes, but sometimes it's just impossible to get away from my desk.

My energy level must be ok because I'm not sleeping. But I've always had problems with insomnia so it's hard to tell.  I'm past the point of being exhausted at the end of the day.  Sometimes I nap at lunch but not always.

Not doing much exercise.  Considering joining a gym once my finances straighten out (been so  hot, 100+ over the weekend, not good walking weather, makes me lightheaded and queasy).  At least it would be air-conditioned.  I still get lightheaded when I do too much or stand up too fast.  But I know that's because of the eating/drinking thing.

I think I have 2 weeks left on my doctor's restrictions as far as lifting.

Mine are "scars", but they're still red and itchy.

I should have been more specific, I'm more concerned about internal healing.  About how long for that?

Red and itchy sounds pretty normal.

Dr. K did my revision and what you describe in terms of your incision sounds like mine.

I had a strong version to most foods for bout 3 mo.....in fact pretty much lived on bacon and shakes. Just keep your fluids up and find. Few good protein sources that you can make yourself eat.

I promise, it will get better.

You may be healing a little bit longer, but I'd expect you to soon be feeling more like yourself very soon.
