One month out from surgery will I ever be able to eat!

I'm one month out from surgery and still can't eat most food even "cream of soups" causing discomfort! What worked for others to eat? How long was it before you were able to eat a salad ? Or just sit down w/the family and enjoy a meal w/o feeling like you going to throw up after two tiny bites?

My family still laughs at me because I eat so little but it isn't because I feel sick, I just can eat that much due to the restriction. Are you taking antacids and sure you're not dehydrated? I would hate that you're not able to eat more than a couple of bites. What does your surgeon say?

i basicly couldn't eat hardly anything for basicly 3 months. some foods were better than others ... then sometimes my good foods did feel good either sometimes:(

it is really rough and won't really want to eat. just stick to what you can and focus mostly on fluids & protein... vits is another slow thing too

it really is hard work, WLS is not the 'easy' way out. i still eat pretty tiny but can definatly eat more than right after post op. mine got better and usually everyones does but if you are having serious trouble keeping food down or pain, you should ask your surgeon. antacids are amazing, i don't use them often but when i feel the burn i take it right away and i am good:)

 Hi Mariah,

This is completely normal!  I felt sick as a dog for about 2 months and wondered exactly the same thing.  A few people told me that one day I would wake up and not feel like this anymore... They were absolutely right.

Remember your body has been through one heck of an ordeal and in the process of saying "what the hell just happened?!"  Your body is healing and your stomach will feel tender for a while... Eat what you can and what you can stand.

Also you will find (perhaps) that food you loved before surgery you won't be able to stand and visa versa.  It will get better and as you progress you will be amazed at what you can eat... Some foods will sit really well some days and you will think that you have "conquered" it and the next day you won't be able to stomach it... It has no rhyme or reason...

I am 4 1/2 years out and it still happens to me, as well as being able to eat like a pig some days, and others I simply can't get much down....

You will be alright and welcome to the dark side!!! Congratulations on your surgery and continue to be good to yourself ok... What works for you may not work for others... Right now be gentle with your stomach and body.. Listen to what it needs :)

I would recommend trying something not-creamy, for you may be reacting badly to the milk.  Try ricotta cheese instead.  For some reason, it may not cause the same effect and it's full of protein.  Egg, chicken or tuna salad is another great starter.  Baby shrimp, too.

Hi. Sorry you are still feeling ucky.  I just wanted to share that acid can cause symptoms very diferent that the heartburn that people normally think of.  I felt like I was always on the verge of nausea for a few months and that completely disappeared when the doctor put me on aciphex. Also like you, swallowing liquids hurt.  But eating a cracker did not.  Not sure why.

Just wanted to send you a cyber hug.  I am three weeks out tomorrow and I feel great as long as I don't eat... For me, the liquids are worse than the soft foods.   What goes down easiest is a scrambled egg, oatmeal (cooked with milk and a little bit more milk added after) sweet potatoe puree, regular potatoe (I know they are high in carbs but that's not overly important at this point)

Someone told me the only way they could eat at first was to have a popsicle before eating their meal and that helped things stay down.  I didn't try it but it might be worth a shot.

I also found that if I waited too long between meals then the pain was worse when I started to eat - reading the responses, I am thinking it was acid.  It didn't feel like heartburn but this makes sense.

I'm 6.5 weeks out and just now trying more than broth's and proteins.  Soup was like a delicacy last week.  I had it everyday.  Just not the stuff inside.  A friend of mine looked at me... You haven't even eaten a 1/4 of the cup of soup.  I said "That is all I can eat".  My BFF will tell you I have the patience of Job.  This surgery is trying everything inside of me!

I did try an egg w/cheddar cheese and butter this morning.  I was able to eat half of it.  This is the first time since surgery.  I am so happy about it!!!  Tonight Chicken soup. 1/2 banana.  Water.  That is my food intake ... I will do a protein shake or something later this evening.  I feel that I made a lot of headway today with the egg, maybe a turning point.  Look for your turning point, there will be a day like that.

Live in the present.  Take each day as a new day!

Since this surgery, I have sleep issues.  Last night (with the exception of getting up twice and ankle cramps). I slept 13 hrs, it feels great!!!
